Steemit Mentioned On Forbes

in #steemit5 years ago (edited)

In an article recently published on Forbes, there is a round up (or more like an opinion) about upcoming social media services, from Patreon, to newly launched platforms like Steemit and HyperSpace.

One sentence caught my attention and I thought it would be interesting to share it with you here:

[ Steemit ] It is a useful service as because of its decentralised nature, there should be no censorship - but that is in question because there is still Steemit Inc heading up the entire operation.

A significant part of the article is dedicated to HyperSpace, with quite a few paragraphs of quotes from its CEO.

Outside of our community lot of people are making the confusion between STEEM and Steemit. How to change that, I have no idea... This would have been the scope of a STEEM foundation, but we don't have a functional setup in this regards...

I guessed many people believed that steemit is decentralised but the steemit.inc still keeps them confusing about it

We don't have much in the way of solid unified information going out to the real world. I would hope that this year once we have gotten past the onboarding and set up proper communities that we will be ready to market and promote. The timing need to be right as we want to keep any new people that join and grow the numbers properly.

Hey, @dragosroua.

After reading the article you link to, I'm left pondering a few things.

I've been here for just over a year now, and in that time, Steemit Inc. did very little in the way of anything, including censorship or punishing bad behavior, etc. In fact, in some cases, where some direction or policy would have been nice, there wasn't much at all in the way of communication. So, if anything, as far as Steemit Inc still running the show here, I agree they have the power to do it thanks to owning the largest share of STEEM/SP, but if they've been exerting a lot of influence here on the chain, it's been too backroom or two subtle for me to see it. From what I can tell, their main control has been in dissuading developers from moving on with their own versions of things, like communities (but not limited to that), simply because Steemit Inc had plans for something related.

Now a lot of that is beginning to change and more and more community developers are announcing reboots or official starts on these concepts. Mainly because of Steemit Inc's recent financial woes, which apparently has signaled a sufficient loosening of the grip on development that they were holding. Or something.

As it is, I've found the activities of prominent users on this platform to be far more aggressive when it comes to any form of compliance or pushing a centralized policy or agenda. While people will balk anytime the term censorship is used with regards to what these folks are doing through flags or other means, the fact of the matter is, there's more control being exerted among them than I've ever seen Steemit do.

So, it seems times, they are a' changin', and hopefully that message can get back to those who write these offchain pieces.

Interesting development for steem.
