DoD | Tutorial | I have nothing to hide but i like to | 5 steps

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

There are many ways to protect your privacy and be anonymous.
We would like to point out a method you could use. It will be several steps and you do not have to follow them all. It just depends on how eager you want to protect yourself. If you follow all the steps there will be no connection to your old online identity. So you could create a new one. So we did.

We will not make a install tutorial for every product named here because there are many good ones online. But of course we will provide the links to the tutorials.

The steps
1 Create a save place for your stuff (Virtual machines) with veracrypt
2 Whonix and VirtualBox
3 Get a extra layer of security (VPN) and buy it with anonymized Bitcoins
4 Create a proton mail account and use a temporary email add to do so
5 Some tips

STEP 1

First you want your VM's on a disk that is encrypted. Just in case. If you are really spooked create a hidden volume.

The idea of a hidden volume is that you mound the same disk file (container) but use a different password. When using that password you get your hidden volume mounted with the right VM's. But if the bad guys are hitting you because they want access to the veracrypt container they just found on your pc. Just give them the other password.

They will mount the volume and see some stuff you want them to see. Of course make it not to obvious by having a empty volume. So put some porn on it ;-) or blockbuster movies. But nothing that get you in real trouble.

A hidden volume can not be found. Because the space it occupied on the veracrypt container could also be the random data that is always part of a standard veracrypt container. So it can not be proven that a hidden volume exist.

If you have no idea yet how to use veracrypt just go the website. They have a nice tutorial.

STEP 2

Now you have a mounted volume it is time to build something.

First we need Oracle virtual Box
So we go to https://www.whonix.org/wiki/VirtualBox#Landing
Here you download 2 OVA files. The OVA files you can import in VirtualBox

The idea of whonix is that you use 2 virtual machines. This is more secure that use Tor on your pc. The reason behind this is that you can still leak your real ip and such.Like leaking your IP trough the protocol WebRTC. This protocol is used in all main browsers!. Want to know if you leak? https://ipleak.net/

If you are surfing the web with your Whonix-Workstation you are save behind the Whonix-Gateway (Tor router with firewall). Even if you leak (when using VPN in that VM) the only route is trough the Whonix-Gateway and so your Tor Exit ip will show up.

As you have read. We said VPN in Whonix-Workstation. Why would you?
Well Tor is a anonymising network. But that does not mean no one can see what you do when you leave the Tor network. And more important a Tor Exit node could be compromised. And there is also a way to track people back on Tor. Even without leaking. But i would not worry to much about that. Or your enemy must be the NSA ;-)
But to be save use a VPN to protect yourself from bad Tor exit nodes.

STEP 3

We need a VPN.

Not 1 that is free and also not 1 that is keeping logs. We are not going to advice you a specific VPN because there is so much choice. But for this case there are some important services we want.

No personal information
If possible no email. If needed go to STEP 4 first. But i prefer having a VPN first.
Bitcoin of course :)

In this case we will use https://www.mullvad.net/

We just get a random number as login and very nice is that you also get 3 hours free. Very important hours that we can use to get a bitcoin wallet etc. without going trough Tor exit nodes without protection.

So download a bitcoin wallet you like. Example https://multibit.org/
We would advice to create a new one on this VM because if you already have one in use on a other computer it is traceable to you.

Now we have a wallet we need bitcoins. But you need to buy them and depending on how you do it. There is a change it will show up somewhere. Nothing you can do about that but there is a trick.

Use your normal computer to buy some bitcoins and send them to the bitcoin address you created on https://bitmixer.io/ / bitmixer2whesjgj.onion . This service will mix your coins and then send those to your new bitcoin address (the one you just created in your Whonix-Workstation). For more info about the working on this cleaning of bitcoins see https://bitmixer.io/how.html

STEP 4

Creating a identity.

It all depends on what you want to do online. Email, Twitter, IRC and such. For most services you need to validate. So we need an email address to get our first...well email address :)

Of course we love http://protonmail.com so just go there for a encrypted email box.

To validate you will need a temporary email add. You can create one on http://maildrop.cc/ it works perfect. E-mail sent to the alias address will also show up in this inbox. Use an alias address when you need a little bit more security - people cannot view the alias address inbox without knowing the original address.

Oh and i use a random profile spoofer on my browser. It just changed when i made the screenshot :)

For a temporary telephone number use https://tempophone.com/

STEP 5

Just watch out and do not visit your normal sites and especially !!! do not login with accounts you used somewhere else. And of course the other way around. What happens in Whonix stays in Whonix :)

If you have any comments or new ideas we would love to hear them.
