Yikes! Some of my Steemit Comments have VANISHED! Anyone Else?

in #steemit8 years ago

When something happens once, that's just life.

When something happens twice, it's a strange coincidence.

When something happens THREE (or more) times... that's when I start wondering whether there's something weird going on.

Welcome to the Strange Case of the Disappearing Comments!

Is there dirt in the Steem?

I first noticed something slightly odd about a week ago... I like reading and curating and interacting with people's posts, and I wrote a fairly extensive comment, posted it... but when I came back a couple of hours later to see if the author had replied... my comment wasn't there.

I considered this for a bit... considered I might have pressed "CLEAR" instead of "POST" but realized it was unlikely, as I distinctly remember being returned to the original post. Eventually, I attributed it to "Internet fuzz..." that strange thing that occasionally "eats content" without explanation.

Then... just a couple of days ago I went back to check on a fairly detailed comment I had left on someone else's post... and I couldn't find the comment (a different comment) again

I know I left that comment... I saw it in the post's comment stream before leaving the page.

At this point, I'm wondering whether there's a bug in the system.

UprootedTree
Feeling a little uprooted, here...

Then yesterday, I wrote a pretty long and detailed comment on a different user's post... once again, I saw it post, I actually re-read it for typos (I sometimes do that with long comments); so very clearly it was THERE... and then it was "gone," a few hours later when I came back to see if there'd been any replies.

And Then, there was This Morning

This morning... the same thing happened TWICE, within a two-hour period.

Once, I posted about a 4-sentence comment on a "new" post, where I clearly saw my comment "post;" not hard to miss when there are only two comments.

But most annoying... I wrote a really long and kind of significant comment... finished it, proofed it, posted it, SAW it as I checked for typos (like with the other comment)... and now it's GONE, three hours later.

Suddenly, I am not a happy camper!

Anyway, before I check myself into a mental facility for having issues with hallucination... OR file a bug report... has anyone else experienced anything like this recently?

In Summary

Lighthouse
Hopefully someone can shed some light here...

Seems this started about a week ago, as best I can tell.

I even checked my recent activity log on steemd.com and feel a little concerned because there are things missing! Events, transactions...

What the heck is going on?

Is there some kind of "lag time" during which a post might have been written back to my screen visually before it formally became part of the blockchain? Or, as the case may be, didn't become part of the blockchain?

I guess I'm going to start my own "event log" to double check myself here... used to do that on several forums/sites with "dodgy" posting algorithms. It's just time consuming and annoying.

But before I get all spazzy about it, I'd love to hear back from anyone else out there... possibly even one or two of the witnesses and developers who are more plugged in than I.

Thanks in advance!

Hey denmarkguy , I had something somewhat similar happen a while back. I had posts that I made disappear from the tags they were listed under. The posts themselves are still on my page , but don't seem to appear anywhere else unless you search for them directly.

I had made a post about it a while back asking what happened exactly , the only response I got was some guy telling me that it was impossible for it to be deleted off the blockchain , so not very helpful :( .

So I kind of know what you mean and how disappointing it is to put time and effort into something only to have it get lost in the digital aether. Hopefully these things won't happen on here too much in the future , or even better never :)

I suppose maybe I've been taking a little too much for granted around here... Steemit IS still in Beta, so errors can be expected. I know things can't just be taken off the blockchain, so the issue must be in the "post" sequence... remember that from old database days, something would be displayed but the result wouldn't actually be written to the database.

Yes, it's a bit frustrating... but now I just know to copy any longer comments before posting.

Same happened to me @denmarkguy... at first I thought it was my mistake but then same situation repeated.......

Thanks for the feedback @awesome-seven... at least I'm not going nuts, then!

You welcome! Glad to know I wasn't the only one thinking I was going nuts... ;-)

Yea something like this happened to me too. I know I replied and upvoted on a comment but had to do that over again. Yea like what @freebornangel said, it's ongoing and random.

It's just sort of annoying... but as someone else pointed out, Steemit is still in Beta. Just have to remember to copy everything-- or at least LONG comments-- before posting.

Ya it happened to me multiple times too. I figured there would be some bugs in Beta mode. I've also had issues with posts sometimes too. Hey we're still early in this thing so there's gonna be some kinks.

Ah yeah, I keep forgetting we're still in Beta around here. Stuff like this is bound to happen...

Yep , same thing can happen when you go to post a blog. I always remember to save a copy first before hitting the button. Just in case.

Yep, going to go back to doing that... just glad it's a "general thing," not just me going crazy!

I haven't noticed, but I haven't been looking for it. I'll keep my eyes peeled for this happening to my comments...

Wouldn't have noticed, myself, had several of those comments not been (a) LONG and (b) part of ongoing comment discussions.

I haven't noticed but thanks for the heads up.

It's uncommon-- maybe 1-in-200 posts-- I just noticed because the ones I lost were part of a comment "conversation."

That is too bad. I try to remember to make a copy of my posts because I have messed up and lost a post in the past.

No disappointment here. I am waiting to see others.

Just posted a screenshot about what happened to my last comment when I edited it. It's a bit funny actually...
Haven't seen a reason or explanation yet. My guess, it could be due to server overload. https://steemit.com/bug/@dinoo/bug-on-steem-hickup-when-editing-comments-and-other-glitches-performance-issues
