Yes, I guess so. I heard that only the top 20 get 95%+ of the blocks (or similar), so is it profitable being a (backup) witness at position 50, or do people just do it with the hope/intention of getting into the top 20?

Anyone voting for these low ranking (or dormant) witnesses are targets for shifting these votes then.

Top 20 are able to sign every block. It only starts dropping off after top 20. Not sure what level you need to be at to be profitable or worth the effort.

Top 20 witnesses does one block every 63 second (21*3). They receive a reward of about 0.1 SP/block.
21- witnesses gain one block based on votes delegated. 2% gives about 1 block/2.25 hours. A backup witness gain about 0.9SP/block though.

At position 21 you witness about 60 blocks per dat, resulting in about the same as a top 20 witness, but without the hassel to keep up the pace.

As a top 20 witness you have more inflation over some of the network parameters though. You're part of the APR, Blocksize and Price consensus.

Thanks, that's interesting. So a kind of sweet spot, without influence or responsibility.

Exactly. But the likelihood of staying in that sweet spot is low once your up there. But anything from 21-30 is a very good position to be at. Your not responsible for any major network related settings, but still earn a good deal of SP.

But staying there still requires dedication. There is no way someone can stay up there for long without doing something good for the community.
