Adventures in Steemit #3: Upvotes, Comments, and Avatars + More Thoughts
It's been a little while since my last blog about my adventures in Steemit - it's interesting to see how effective even one blog can have. It's the butterfly effect...
The negative flagging seems to have calmed down, which is good. Steemit seems to be getting into a more positive and productive mood - which is needed since the price of SBD has been so low.
For this blog I want to write about the latest observations I've made, primarily on upvoting. I suppose this has to do with the price of SBD, or maybe I'm wrong, but the power of the upvote doesn't seem as strong.
I remember when it would only be 17 or so upvotes and I'd get a nice amount of potential payout on a blog. And now, I'll get like 100 upvotes and barely pull a few pennies. It's not just me, I've noticed it's everyone.
Just go to the trending section and you'll see the breadwinners are needing 100's of upvotes to pull a few hundred bucks. So, this is interesting to me.
Perhaps the Whales really have all mostly left and it's us minnows who are keeping things going? I don't know, but it's interesting. If it is a Whale thing, then I sure wish they'd come back and participate. I feel that Steemit is on the brink of breaking out into the mainstream, which when it does then things will be even better for everyone.
Another thing I've noticed is that there are more people getting out and about and curating/reading. I'm glad I suggested this and have been doing the same myself because it really does pay to do so. For me it's value is from being able to talk to people, and make new friends. It's really fun for me because I enjoy all the many different topics being blogged about, too.
One of the things I do wish that would be implemented are avatars. People are visual and to see an avatar seems to help me connect better with the blogger.
In a short while I'm going to start hosting Steemit meetups in my area. This will be a way for people to meet each other and bring things into reality. I feel that Steemit is much more than a blogging/social media platform - it's a revolution. This can be the start of something very special. I feel it in my bones. :)
Steem on!
...
Thank you for posting.
Speaking of avatars.....as there is a broad spectrum of participants and as many more the reasons for participating...it would be doubtful that all posters want avatars. Therefore an avatar should be optional as with many of the features available at Steemit.
I agree! Everything should be optional. Even having a private option might be good, too. For those who don't want their content to be seen just by anyone.
Thank you for your reply.
Yes....privacy would be nice. At the moment..the privacy availalble is limited...anyone can build a profile on anyone else quite easily...it does cause ponderance especially when you are your thoughts....and that is what we do...write our thoughts....hopefully staying in the realm of objectivity.
Principle....Freedom and the right to privacy/property stand or fall together.
It is so interesting to see thoughts from Steemit users from just right before I actually started using the system. I keep coming from a background of any potential of payout is better than the no payout one was getting from Facebook or Reddit or whatever it was that a person may now be using Steemit instead. I do not think I have had any financial gain from Steemit in a real life way, but the blogs I enjoy on here I really do enjoy. I hope the ton of new users on the site are feeling the same way and do not have large expectations that they all should be being paid just to Steem versus being able to share some cool content and see the value in sharing that, as it looks like Steemit is full of new users https://steemit.com/activity/@cryptohazard/steemd-last-24-hours-analysis .
I forgot, I completely agree with avatars need to be a thing here already. It is weird to have that space available and it not in use on the site.
Yeah, the true value is certainly the people and writings. I personally think a healthy approach is to not think of the $$, but the value of building a great community.
I think something has to be done about that gray human outline, maybe replace it for a humanoid 👽 instead? You really don't know if you are dealing with humans anyways, but I think it would make for an excellent joke as to the learning curve when you first open your account. A joke about how out of place you can feel when you first join Steemit. It's more inclusive than that Ruby Rose outline.
In a way I like it that people don't get to show their picture as easily as in facebook, just to set an example, because I think it could give the impression that people are judged similarly here. At the same time, knowing how internet users are about their territory, a lot of people may not even join upon finding out they can't set a profile pic.
Perhap's the picture could go on the blue space on top of every profile? That way the picture wouldn't show next to the article on the feeds but users feel like they can personalize their blog a little more. Sort of like the cover picture on fb.
Haha. :) I like the idea. Maybe start off with a gray alien head, then as time goes and the more you participate you get to move onto others like robot, then eventually one day be able to (if you so choose) to have any avatar of your wish.
I really enjoyed this comment, @tommycordero.
I don't see why not! They already have half the plot made with the little saucer that sometimes comes up when pictures are not being read properly :p
I did not realize it was her outline. That's funny stuff, right there. :)
