👍🏼 Do You Rate a Book or Movie Based on Its Title? Why the Upvote Option in all Steemit Feeds is Actually Kind of Strange

I’ve been a part of the awesome Steemit community for almost 8 months now and as long as I can remember we are able to upvote posts directly on the feed pages. This means you can upvote a post from for instance the ‘trending’, ‘new’ or your own feed instantly, without taking a further look at the content of that particular post.
To me, this is a bit strange. It’s like rating a book or movie solely based on its title and cover. Isn’t that weird? What does this mean for the quality of the upvotes given?
Also it is not common practice for content platforms. You cannot ‘like’ a video on Youtube directly from your feed or search results. You cannot clap for an article on Medium directly from the category pages or Homepage.
If upvoting directly from the feeds would not be possible, would that be a good thing? Some things that I see happening if the option is removed from the feeds:
- It would decrease the total number of upvotes given, purely because it takes more effort to upvote.
- The upvotes that are given are more likely to be genuine upvotes given by people that actually read or watched the contents of the post. Of course, everybody can still open a post, scroll down and upvote easily. But even if someone was planning to do that, with the need to open the post he or she is at least able to noticed that the quality sucks (just 1 picture or 3 sentences etc.), and he or she is less likely to upvote if that is the case.
- Due to less ‘dumb/blind’ upvotes, each genuine upvote is worth more since the reward pool remains the same.
- Since you are ‘forced’ before you can upvote to at least take a quick glance at the content, the chance that you will actually read or watch it increases. This might increase engagement on the platform in general and lead to more and better discussions in the comments.
- It would eventually decrease the number of poor quality posts, because the rewards are less and tricking the game becomes less interesting. This incentivises everybody to create better content.
I cannot really think of negative effects for the Steemit ecosystem of removing the upvoting option from the feed. Only the time to upvote takes a few seconds longer. But hey, if you sincerely want to upvote, those few seconds should not matter right?
What do you guys think? Would this be an interesting way to increase real engagement and more genuine upvoting or would this be a bad idea?

It’s an idea Which I was thinking about it long time ago to decrease the rush of people upvoting or commenting meaninglessly
Indeed! I like the curation rewards mechanism a lot in Steemit, but if upvoting is too easy, people are inclined to just vote asap and to hope for rewards.
The curation mechanism is not easy to accurately and precisely understand. However, it’s not bad so far, but I think it could be improved to decrease the rush of the meaningless comments
Coool thinking @cryptotem, appreciated!
Thanks @bubke! I was searching actually for the best way to get this under the attention of the right people (devs) here. Do you by any chance know if there is a particular tag for that?
Steemitdev if i remember well but way to go these days is put proposition on utopian.io
Thanks! I changed the tags :-)
Ha, now you make me curious, i thought tag changing was not possible. I could understand because you can just change your tags every day and get some new readers by doing that.
For utopian.io, i think you need to post through their website, first tag comes automatically on utopian (a bit like dtube, dmania, etc.). It is really worth checking it out because they have millions of delegated SP, you can get rich just with a good idea :-)
I think it is possible, but the main tag remains the same and you cannot change that (so URL remains the same as well).
Yes, often the number of upvotes is more than many the number of views.
True, if that is the case too often that is an indicator of an unhealthy balance.
Yes, it seems like it would much better to at least have to click on the blog before an upvote was allowed. Like Youtube.
Agreed. Imho I think that would at least help a bit and does not have negative side-effects. Of course people will find ways to bypass that, but the platform as a whole might benefit from it :-)
Yes, its def something for the community to consider. The most pressing things right now are getting those communities rolled out similar to how Reddit has b/c the Steemit feed pages are being flooded. When need the sub threads ASAP. Looks like SMT's are already launching with one of first tokens being Appics. Maybe a group can make a better Steemit on the Steem blockchain. This one is great but we just need these updates to roll out soon. Steem blockchain has massive traction. Even in huge market crash and bear market Steemit popularity is increasing on Google trends and the daily transactions are averaging 1.7 million per day. The amount of users have double from just a month and half ago!
I am glad you brought this up. I am all for the idea. I questioned Steemit's functionality in the way you do on this subject when I started last May, but just accepted it!
en algún momento pensé en eso, quería eliminar a todas esas personas que no leen los post y solo comentan incoherentemente!
I pulled your comment through Google Translate and if I understand correctly, we are on the same page. People should READ, not just upvote/comment!
Exacto amigo, así debe de ser :D
