How Do Steemit Followers Compare to YouTube and Instagram Followers?

Lately I've been talking to more and more of my friends about Steemit. One of their first questions when I tell them that I've been starting to get more requests for interviews or speaking engagements - is how many followers I have. When I tell them it's about 4k... they are really surprised.
In the world of YouTube, Instagram, and other sites - 4k would be nothing. You really need to amass at least a 50k following before things start moving and shaking.
In this video, I do a more direct comparison on how gaining a followership on Steemit differs from other content sites and why the fact that's it different is actually really cool. I discuss engagement ratios and retention in this video too. I did a video talking about followership last week and there was a lot of interest, so I thought I’d dive into another aspect of this conversation!

What a great topic to talk about! Would like to share some shocking statistics of mine:
It took me exactly 655 days to earn my first 266 subscribers on YouTube. As a comparison, it only took me 112 days to gain the 266 followers on Steemit as of today.
Almost every Steemit post has legit comments on them (which means not counting spam). Less than half of my YouTube videos have comments on them.
My 2.5 year old YouTube channel has gotten a grand total of 649 likes across 189 videos. Compare that with my 112 days old Steemit account, this account has collected 2,029 upvotes across 51 Steemit posts (not including comments), this is nuts!
The same YouTube channel received 282 dislikes across 189 videos. Well, only received one troll downvote so far on one Steemit post.
I earned exactly $97.71 USD across my 166 YouTube videos that did generate ad revenue (that's until YouTube demonetise my channel due to policy changes). Guess what, it only took me 3 DTube videos to surpass that amount (at today's prices). Unbelievable.
In conclusion, there's no need for huge influence to be successful on the Steem blockchain, as of today. We should consider ourselves as the early adopters of this platform that may be as huge as today's Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Great opportunity for those who missed out on the early days of those mainstream social media platforms.

I agree I tied to start on YouTube and dtube at the Same time but now I just go dtube I get way more engagement over here

The idea of making a living by becoming a YouTube star seems silly these days because it is so hard to break through. Here on Steemit - even people that are new users have an opportunity to stand out if their content is good. Of course time and energy building community are needed to sustain that - but it is a very cool opportunity for content creators.
You are so right. I talk more to my followers here than any other platform. I have 600 followers here on Steemit and I am more engaged with them. On facebook I have close to 4K and only 2% engage. On YouTube we have 2500 and on average 35-50 views per video the first 2 days. It is insane. I have only 3 or 4 people that I actively have a conversation with on my videos. Here it depends on what the topic is but the conversations are more real.

One of the biggest things I noticed when I first joined Steemit was the depth and quality of comments. On other content sites - people will often leave short, unremarkable comments like "Nice video!".
Here people really engage and get to know each other. :) It's so cool.
it makes it feel like you are actually connecting with a person. And that is what social networks should be all about. The rest is just extra.
Hey this is great, it's really fascinating how when we all own the network instead of just trying to vie for scraps of attention on someone else's centralized network like twitter or instagram so "someday" we can "do something with it," that we all care about what each other is doing A LOT more. I agree, over here is a much more personal interaction that makes the experience much more interesting. But you have to work for that as well and hold them. This requires some constant effort.

Completely agree! I have 872 followers so far and feel like I have a little community of like-minded people to connect with already! I'm so interested to see how things grow and change as more and more people jump on! In so many ways it's the most exciting social media space to me 😎

Honestly I love my subs over on YT but the problem is the algorithm that is now systematically NOT showing my own subs my new videos for reasons that are beyond me. However, on here there is no algorithm and so everything I publish gets shown to all my followers as long as they check their feed and see it. Of course you get curation rewards on here as well which is a huge plus, especially compared to Googles revenue program for creators, which is a paradox in itself because they want you to click on those adverts and leave the site but you also want the viewers to watch your video so no one wins in the end...

I hear a lot of YouTuber's talk about the algorithm change these days. I can only imagine how frustrating that would be after spending so much time and energy to build your channel.
Funny point about the ads directing people away from the video! That is a bit of a paradox. One of my favorite things about posting content here is being able to monetize my content without dealing with ads.
