Nail on the head with the intrinsic motivation thing. Nothing is more rewarding than achieving something you do for genuine enjoyment, be it something challenging, something creative, or even something pointless. Extrinsic motivation on the other hand is very fragile, superficial and transient.
and with innovations like Steemit, hopefully you can earn money (extrinsic reward) to allow you to keep on doing what you find intrinsically rewarding :)
