200 likes + 30 comments = $5000, 20 likes + 3 comments = $5, 2 likes + 1 comment = $0.05?

Why is there such a huge jump in payout?

200 likes + 30 comments = $5000
20 likes + 3 comments = $5
2 likes + 1 comment = $0.05

What are the actual specifics that you need to achieve to have a $5,000 blog post?

The number of votes that you get is not important. What matters is the amount of steem power held by the accounts that vote for you. For example, when I vote for you, it gives you something like $0.35. If dantheman voted for you it would give you something like $400.00. The purpose of this is that it is very easy to make spam accounts and get hundreds of votes. However, it is very expensive to make an account with a lot of steem power. Thus, rewards are based on the steem power behind the accounts, not the number of accounts that vote for you.

hahaha. so there is some fool called dantheman who is like the steem lord of the world?

Well he, along with @ned are the two creators of steemit.

How much would it cost to buy as much steem power as they have?

ALL THE MONEY

Combined, @ned, @dan, and @dantheman have about $20 million worth of Steem Power.

Over time, if this site remains popular, will their steem power drop or grow?

If you hold steem power, you receive interest on your steem power, so the number of steem power you have grows over time. That's not to say that the dollar value of your steem power will increase or not, which is a lot more complicated of a question.

Very helpful! Thanks for clarifying this, @trogdor
