I think it just takes time for the whole thing to play out. At this stage everything is an experiment and we are in uncharted waters here. It may seem like a "selfish platform" at this stage but I think in the long run "selfishness" will mean that only the best content makes it on Steem. Steem will reward those who put in the best effort with the best content and curating only the stuff that actually matters. Just give it some time. Keep on upvoting only what you like and not voting on the bots and i think in the long run it will all work out...probably :)
