10 simple features that would make steemit.com amazing!

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

After using steemit.com for a few weeks i have gathered the following 10 simple features that would get us a small step closer to coming out of the beta stage:

1. The homepage really needs a FAQ!

This is absolutely the most important of all! The developers are currently developing and testing the site and blockchain almost 24/7 i imagine, but someone has to invest some time in writing a SIMPLE FAQ for the homepage. Beginners are completely clueless how any of this works.

2. Remove the voting and flagging buttons for post lists

Having a these buttons next to the title of the post makes absolutely no sense! It only promotes botting behavior. Nobody can read the post in less than a few minutes. This is the exact behavior that is unwanted on SteemIt and should be fixed ASAP.

3. User profiles

SteemIt really needs user profiles just like Youtube has! It's probably going to require a hard fork, but it's really needed!

4. Show voting power

Voting power should at least be visible on pages where people can vote. Preferably it's just a simple figure or icon somewhere in the top corner of the site! Right now people have to go to an external site (steemd.com) to check their voting power. Most people probably still don't know about this site.

5. Being able to add a thumbnail picture when posting

Right now when you are making a post you have to add the picture to the actual post which is not always wanted. To me it seems technically possible to exclude the thumbnail from the content because the thumbnail seems to be metadata and not the actual content of the post. Correct me if i'm wrong :)

6. Blog history needs filters

Currently when go to any user's blog history you just see all blogs chronologically. When there are 1000's of posts you can imagine how big of a pain it will be to find something! The blog history page needs filters like per tag/trending/hot and also needs a search field! Obviously everything needs to update in real-time.

7. Contact list/address book

We could use a dropdown list with all our contacts wherever you can type in an account (transfers and soon private messages). I don't know if saving it on the blockchain is the smartest idea so probably using local cookies or something is fine for now.

8. Real-time updates

Currently counts and earnings only update when you vote or manually refresh the page. This currently confuses a lot of people into thinking they have $5 of voting power!

The second part of real-time updates is the new posts. I suggest doing it similar to Twitter (add a button on top that has to be clicked to reveal the new posts)

9. Comment notifications

It would be really handy if you get a notification of some sort (similar to Youtube) whenever someone commented on anything you participated in.

10. A real-time search field

We really need a search field to search for posts with a certain keyword that updates in real-time. I suggest showing the first 10 results and add a button below to show the next X results.

Sort:

I agree for some of the suggestions as well, because currently to get some of that much needed functionality you need to rely on external services such as steemstats.com (very useful BTW) and it would be nice to see some of the features present there getting integrated in the steemit.com directly. I think however that at the moment the team should be addressing some bugs and more pressing issues with the website instead of introducing new features…

At least follow is coming really soon :)

I agree that they should focus on technical stuff first. Mainly the voting and reward algorithms. Those make me so angry currently!

great ideas, you have my vote!
By the way, it would be great to have the link displayed that links to the social media site the user has signed up. though that it would be lot more easy to find fake accounts.

Good post, I also miss bookmarks or maybe a history of upvotes a lot.

Bookmarks? I really don't understand that one. Every browser has a bookmark feature!

True, but I use bookmarks in my browser in a whole different way. It's more for bookmarking a site.
Also in most of the browsers you need to click at least two times to store a bookmark. When I could get a history of 'favorited' posts with the click of one button and the possibility to sort those favorite posts by tags or time that would be much more convenient then the usual bookmark feature of the browser.

Have you thought about a Read Later feature?

Sometimes there are new good posts showing at a very fast pace and I have to open them in mutiple tabs just to be sure to read them at alater time, especially if they are longer in terms of content.

Having a small Read Later button and a Tab in the user profile can be helpful to check all the articles you want when you have the time to do it...

I don't agree with numbers 1 and 2, otherwise these seem pretty on point.

Those are literally the highest priority.

And a killer mobile app please! It has been greatly improved recently (still cannot post though), but a service like steemit needs an uber-app!
