An Absolute Beginners, or Curious Wanderers, Quick Guide to Steemit

Time to make a post covering the very rudimentary basics on introducing Steem, with a difference. This is aimed partially at business level users (hopefully) as well as anyone that's currently, or has previously, ran blogs or been involved with content creation. Although, this is also for anyone - because Steemit has become a platform enabling anyone to come along and start making something. However, if you go into it just for the money you will be missing the whole point. Go into Steemit with an open mind, and be ready to learn a heck of a lot along the way. Life is a journey after all - and it's too short not to try these things. Next thing you know, the next platform could come along and you still won't be ready. Starting now could mean that in 6 months or so you'll have found a bunch of new possibilities...it's all there if you look. One fact is clear - Steem is a platform handing out millions in community rewards, and these rewards are getting put back into making things happen out in the real world. You just have to spend time browsing posts on the site to find that out. There is no doubt in my mind, Steem is a socal experiment on a grand epic scale, and kicks off the new digital era of community and financial freedom in a gifting economy, to prove it can have actual purpose and meaning, and be in fact it's own economy worth billions. Or maybe, you want to remain living enslaved to spending time on facebook for free? joking aside, there is a serious way of working happening for sure. So it should be of huge interest to anyone trying to find a way to work online, or just something more worth their time to spend promoting on than Facebook, which for one thing, now costs you a considerable amount to advertise effectively on. Steemit on the other hand, can create you an entirely new income...

I wanted to place it in my own words for a while now, even though it would seem to have been done a million times. To serve actually as a link I can later share with others who may ask me about it. This content was in fact shared with a business contact recently, a company involved in creating digital content I hope to tell you more about soon!

So here it is, 100% original content for anyone who NEVER heard of Steemit.Com!

It all begins with the Steemit slogan - "Come for the rewards, Stay for the community".

What is this Steemit anyway

"Steemit Inc" https://steemit.com is a blogging platform and social media network, that pays and rewards users for actions in real cryptocurrency. Instead of 'Likes', users 'Vote' on content (comments and posts). Votes hold weighted value in the platforms native currency 'STEEM POWER'. A new user has a 1 cent worth upvote. An established, or highly 'powered up' user, can have a lot, $10, $20, $50 and few into the hundreds per vote. So the users decide what gets most attention, and the natural mechanics of the algorithms mean good content goes up, bad content/spam naturally gets pushed down. There's an active trading market for the cryptocurrency 'STEEM' which can be used to buy more profile power on the network, and is traded across many exchanges. Thereby it is also a means of making revenue, or getting a brand new crypto income from all that content, such as digital photos, short stories, family recipes - the list is endless as any subject so many out there may have been archiving up for years ...

After 7 days from original post or comment time, the total vote value is split between the user and the network. As a user you get a wallet where you can transfer or trade your STEEM, which is further broken into a sub-token, Steem Backed Dollars / SBD (this is another topic for beginners starting to receive payouts).

Should I use Steemit.com for my business?

Use Cases for Steemit

There are a hundreds of use cases. Many, the simplist of all, where you have digital products or services that can work globally - you would be insane not to get on steemit. There are now users in every corner of the globe so it could benefit local businesses also. If your company has or wants to have anything to do with cryptocurrency, it comes highly recommended. That's just a side effect of it being a blockchain based platform however - it is in fact a place for all, where you should barely know you are using a blockchain, and a simple wallet lets you use digital currency easily, at zero fees.

Dedicated bloggers / professional content creators are consistently raking in good sums on Steemit.com. The best strategy for steemit.com by far remains the 'communities within community' on Steemit - i.e. picking a niche and finding your audience among existing with more time on the platform will lift you up faster - especially if you are providing something of value to your chosen area. Because the token is trading on major exchanges against bitcoin, it can be converted to cash easily.

What is the best strategy for my content?

Content can generate hundreds of dollars in a single post. But it takes some willingness to invest effort, and mostly time to get up to the big vote payouts. It is possible to invest money to power up a profile, if faster returns are needed. We find it best to start organic and then powerup as you go. Contributing something, for example to sub-projects or sub-communities, can be the most rewarding of all.

Take an approach to using tags properly, enter contests, and post regularly but consistently. Once you know where you are going with blog direction, invest money to use promotion and upvote 'bots' on posts - there is a strategy to check which and how to use them on https://steembottracker.com/ (and just don't overuse, balance between trying to get organic upvotes from larger profiles).

Don't be shy to liven up your posts with something from pexels.com such as this. The image is used free without attribution.I also use a lot of my own photography.

Keep it original. Show humility, errors, challenges. Show the people genuine side, don't be 'corporate'. Show people you are boosting/promoting the network. Share knowledge, teach something or reveal information others can use.

What is the best strategy for using my votes?

Don't vote randomly because you think you should. Every user starts with limited amount of 'steem power' that grows through your actions and rewards from voting, commenting, or posting on the network.

a) Steem Power diminishes with each vote you make, recharging over time. Making 10 or 12 votes per day seeming the best you can do to maintain always above 85% or so of your power. As it goes down, so does the value of your vote. So never go wasting them randomly, it gives only a negative return. There is no limit on how many votes your posts and comments receive.

b) You have a 'downvote' option for spam, in the form of flags This should really only be used for punishing spammers out the system.

c) By 'curating' - selecting content carefully to vote on, as portion of rewards also goes to post voters and commentators. Use it wisely for maximum returns, and accompany votes with a thoughtful or complimentary comment.

More voting

Vote only that good content and mix it with a comment. This is the fastest way to get attention of established users, make them notice and check you out. Platform etiquette: Never ask "hey check out my profile" or beg for votes. Don't damp on how hard it is to grow on the network - it takes a couple of months and there are many strategies, you need to find yours.

Finally, just a @britcoins Golden Rule of STEEM

There are many communities within Steemit. Find what you can local to you or close to your talents and interests, and get involved. Active communities are very powerful for building maximum impact in a shorter timeframe. Interact with other users when you can, this includes using tools such as Discord. A post on how to use Discord effectively is definitely under consideration - basically, most sub-communities in Steemit have a chat group in the app, use it wisely and respectfully to promote and discuss your posts.
