It looks like there was a lot of volume today. At the very least it got people to look at the economic changes that are going to happen and perhaps that was a desirable model for people in the community.
I'm not sure but it is possible that a lot of people who were previously aware of Steemit saw the article and then took a position because they predict the price to rise once the supply is throttled back.
