Boring Trending Posts, Fake Spam Accounts, and Solutions for Steemit to Become 'THE' Social Network!
Delusions of Grandeur.... what the eye sees, and what the mind wants.
You enter steemit.com, it is a magical place where creativity runs wild on the blockchain. Notoriety can be gained with consistent quality posts, and one can even make a living earning crypto this way. This social media platform can undoubtedly take over the Facebook and Twitter realms, as no other playground for posting has offered such a a fun and resourceful way to share life's moments.
I am still here, I love the platform, and thinking of new things to post really motivates me!
There are a few problems though, and it doesn't take much to notice them:
- Trending Posts are always relevant to new crypto breakthroughs and news regarding steemit, the top earners for the site promote steemit to steemit, but don't EXPAND or make steemit known to new communities. New users seeing the same whales earn thousands on their vacation posts can be disheartening, and demotivating (to say the least). New users will not stay if they do not have a chance to earn or become noticed, earning followers and upvotes shouldn't be treated like a job, it should come naturally as it does on other social media sites.
- There is a complete lack of contests for new users, and there is in essence a disregard for people trying to make a name for themselves. I am lucky to have accrued some steem last year, and the value of my account will grow with consistency...but even earning that 1000 steem to my name was incredibly difficult, and a lot of it was luck in having whales notice me.
I have included an example of this contest, and how it can be done well in my solutions section down below.
- Some new users are here to make a quick buck, and I understand that not everyone can be seen in an ocean of thousands. The thing is, flagging helps root out fake users and bullshit comments...but there needs to be more attention to the flag button. It is crucial to keep these fake accounts out to inspire new users to grow; the influx in accounts who spam memes daily and earn off other's work is appalling, and that alone will lose an entire user base.
I am not only to only nit pick...I have some solutions for these problems.
- Maybe there can be a new algorithm for trending posts, a shifting trending post section where $ value isn't the only thing considered. A few whale votes will skyrocket a post into trending.. and keep it there for hours if nothing surpasses it's value. This is just a vicious circle keeping new users out, and there is a consistent lack of creativity and entertaining posts at the top. Will new users be attracted to the hard forks and steemit updates? Maybe once they grow a bigger account, but how about more trending articles on entertainment and more social issues...so that steemit can become relevant and remain that way.
- As a writer for steemsports, we used to hold daily contests. Pick a winner of a game, and whoever chose correctly gets a prize. If many people chose correctly, the prize pool is split evenly, and all the earnings accrued on the actual contest post are dispersed to the players. This was a magnificent game and people loved it, but contests have seemed to fade as people left and complained. Some people will never be happy, and a lot of people love to remain greedily at the top, not wanting anyone else to achieve success. There were a lot of comments really hoping a type of steem earning contest would return, but there were also contrasting opinions that made themselves loud enough to drown out something fun... I think reopening daily contests and alternate means of steem earning would open up a lot of opportunities, and really bring in an influx (of much needed users).
- There needs to be mediation of some sort, there are a few accounts I keep my eye on that I know steal work, that I know don't make original work, and that I flag each time out. It is disheartening to see a post you put up, that took some time and thought, upvoted by a spam account saying 'I love this, have a great day'. It is bullshit, and completely deters people from making quality posts. Younger kids who want to join this social media network should be influenced with creativity and making something heart felt, they shouldn't be influenced by meme makers who spew bullshit and are earning at a steady pace.
This place is something I will be eternally grateful for, and I won't leave. For me, I have time, and I have faith...but if the same trends keep up, I just don't see good things. I want to help, but I also want to achieve.
This place opens a lot of doors, but gives you no direction in which one to walk through. Hopefully that compass can be developed sooner than later.
Insightful and well-written post. I am here for the long haul too and am still learning the navigate. Thanks for sharing!
Much appreciated. Stick with it and you'll do fantastic!
I have seen several of the meme accounts. They drop generic comments, as you noted. I have been here less than a week and that is starting to annoy me. I put effort into leaving thoughtful comments even though I have little time to be on Steemit. Reposting funny memes is one thing, lack of effort to contribute is another. Real value comes from effort snd thought. Thank you for bringing this up, also, I like the contest idea.
Thank you Travis, it is hard to see the bottom at the top...and vice versa. With more posts on creativity and movement, we can root out the bad with good..the real from the fake. I wish you the best of luck on this steemit journey my man, onward and upward!
Effort and quality bring success. If i can find a focal point, or niche, I will be able to really get the ball rolling.
Exactly man! Use what you've got, and use it well!

And this is an exact example of what I am trying to get rid of, the irony, the shamelessness....
