The African pear can be described has being evergreen. it originated from the Eastern part of Nigeria Igbo land, Ibibio, Annang and many more tribes within the South Eastern region of Nigeria.This fruit has many names especially in Nigeria, where it is mostly grown. The Igbos call it "Ube" and the Ibibios and Annangs call it "Eben", others know and give it different names. Botanically, it is known as Dacryodes edulis . When the fruit is ripe, the color is bluish-purple skin and a pale to rich green flesh. Some African countries such as Gabon call it Atanga, Cameroonians call it safouin (safou) while some other parts of the world call it bush-butter pear, butter fruit or African plum.

Scientists have proven it to contain a broad range of pharmacological, medicinal, and biological properties that are highly beneficial to human health. Ube are believed to be anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, diuretic, and antispasmodics in nature.
