The Major Steemit Problem

... or the missing middle class.

Somehow, I've stumbled again on the post that @tarazkp wrote a few weeks ago.

This time, the numbers that @abh12345 produced for it captured my attention so I've decided to create a totally scientific pie chart that tells no lies and shows us exactly what is the major problem this platform has. Can you guess it?

No?

Take a closer look then:

There's no way in hell that the small number of those that have 10k SP + can manually curate the content on this platform and it shows.

There's an invisible steemit out there, a place where the content is being created and not rewarded and it is rather obvious to me why that's happening:

The middle class is almost non-existent.

How to solve this problem? Should it be solved at all?

Note for those that don't know me, I'm not bitching and moaning here. In fact, I'm happy with my steemit experience. I'm almost a poster child that this platform works.

Sort:

Curation has been a problem and you're right... without a sizable middle class, it won't happen. I think there have been a couple of delegation initiatives, with some working out better than others. I think the fulltimegeek one was a good one.

Fastest way to build up steem power is to become a developer on the platform. It's quite a good option... worth exploring.

With 5k steemians that have 10k - 50k SP the whole dynamic would change.

Time permitting, I will be explored 😃

Yeah, with your coding skills i think it will go very well.

You woman 😂
Seriously this is a difficult question to answers. I did read these posts but haven’t a clear answer!
But my 2 cents (the upvote was actually 4 cents):
Here we go:

  • it is hard to define what the middleclass here would be. Maybe the middleclass would be from 250 to 500 SP. I myself own just a little bit more than 300 SP, which should be the middle class! It about place 13000 in the rankings!
  • what would the middle class do? Lots of people of fishing in the same pool to catch minnow, whale or dolphin upvote. They are upvoting their posts to get noticed, which is just wasting steempower. And what baffles me is that they just neglect other red fishes and don’t upvote each others posts!

We have to face it that there are a lot of us money hungry piranhas here. We see them all day and even within our own discord group!

Cheers,
Peter

Thanks for your 6 cents 😂

what would the middle class do?

Support the small fish and get the support from the whales in return.

It's much easier for the whales to support a number of dolphins than to support a ton of minnows. A sort of trickle-down arrangement.

A numerous middle class would be interested in many things. Almost all niches would have a sizable number of those in the middle class to support it.

IMHO, the dolphins are the middle class. We need more of them.

Dolphins aren’t the middle class. They are just the poor upperclass 😁 Sorry don’t want to offend anyone!
Maybe the minnows are the middle class! But most of them do some whale fishing.
Only 10% of the people here do have are minnow or above. So the middle class should be between the 30 to 40% upwards to the 90% of the population!
You got lucky with the 6 cents because some delegation was revoked 😔

Dolphins aren’t the middle class.

They are. IN-MY-NOT-SO-HUMBLE-OPINION 😁😁😁

Minnows and bellow are just poor working stiffs

I am glad that we are on the same page about our community 😂
It is good that we have some different opinions!

We have some members with a correct opinion (yours truly) and some members with the wrong opinion that I won't name here 😂😂😂

You shouldn’t pull @costanza or @stimp1024 in to this discussion 😂😂😂
Or where yo referring to me? Can’t imagine that 👊

Or were you referring to me? Can’t imagine that 👊

Never crossed my mind! 😂😂😂

Let me share with you a little secret.
If you invest $500 in SIM cards, and register with Steemit all of them.
Then, you remove 0.400 SP from all those accounts and give to one main account.
That way you get One "middle class" account, and a bunch of accounts with 0.100 SP [+14.900SP delegated from Steemit] which have the same vote weight as an account with 15.000 SP. So basically you can have a bunch of "free" upvotes on the content your strong in SP main account make.
Your investment effectively returns in just couple weeks, as you basically build a whale in no time.
Most of this kind of activity is controlled by bots, therefore there's never loss in revenue. You basically don't need to maintain any of the 100's of account manually.
Only the main account matters.

Only the main account matters.

How about being a good citizen of the platform? Does that matter at all?

I only provide an explenation for the number of small accounts.
Most of them are sock puppets.

I don't doubt that there's a significant number of those.

But even if we exclude them, the percentages won't change much.

Okay, even if we subtract that.
Another lion share of "under 100SP" category would be made off of inactive accounts.
The third category would be growing accounts.
Most people are not going to buy 100 SP. They will be working their way up. Because they were promised a social media platform. Myself included.
5 months on steemit and only 21 SP.

5 months on steemit and only 21 SP.

I'm here since January, 28. 95 SP so far. It would be a bit more but I've decided to donate some of it to the Steemit Betting Community ( @sbcbot ).

Take a look at what @jlordc is doing. As far as I know, he's not bought any STEEM and in 6 months he grew his account to ~320 SP.

Not everyone will be a winner.
I consider my growth rate to be successful, compared to most other newbies.
Could be much higher. I don't game the system as much as I could.

It's pretty simple: buy it.

If you believe in the future of STEEM, you should have a stake in it by staking your cash.

It's pretty simple: buy it.

What if I don't have enough cash to buy 5k STEEM?

Even if I had the means to do it, the problem remains until at least a few thousands of people buy 5k+ as well.

Like anything else you work up to it.

But you're right that if nobody else does it then it doesn't matter much for the long term health of the platform. People who come to steem and think they will get something for nothing become disillusioned pretty quickly. The minnows and redfish need to be convinced that investing in STEEM is worthwhile.

What boggles my mind is the complete lack of comprehension on the math of STEEM. I guess crypto-geeks are spoiled by 10,000% m00n shots to see the value in steady 20-30% returns compounded weekly. STEEM beats the crap out of traditional financial market returns.

That doesn't surprise me at all.

Ego + greed and you have this situation where 20% ROI is boring.
