Things I wish I knew about Steemit from day 1.

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

It was my 3 week Steemit anniversary yesterday. I can't believe it's only been 3 weeks! When I look back at my first week I wish I had more sense and explored the platform a bit better - not that I knew what to search for anyway but still! I wasted 4 days!

So here is my top 5 - I wish I knew things.

.1. Save that introduceyourself post until you've had a feel of what Steemit is all about. People here like to share SHARE. This is not Twitter where your letters are capped. Nor is it Facebook where things posted are most often at face value or flippant. Here on Steemit, you gotta be prepared to write. The more words the better sometimes. With pictures is a plus. Everyone gets to use the tag 'introduceyourself' once.. well maybe twice.. or three times.. Just don't get busted.

.2. Join a group. My stats exploded soon after I joined Team Australia. As you'll see here on the 18th of June, I added 72 people. That was the day I joined & added all Team Australia members. And if you look at my followers list you'll see I get quite a few new followers a day and I like to think that has something to do with me joining Team Australia. Personally I check # teamaustralia quite often more than any other tags or subjects, I'm sure there's plenty out there who do the same.

TeamAustralia (or any of the Steem Wars Teams) and MinnowSupport are my top groups to join and the only two groups I've joined.

.3. Don't just join a group PARTICIPATE in it. Participation is key. You gotta be in it to win it. If you're not posting or at least commenting then people won't know who you are, if people don't know who you are yet, you better be whipping out killer posts to get your audience because one thing I've noticed is we all build our followers and your tightest peeps will always be the ones you can depend on to click that up vote button. And how do you successfully build your loyal followers base? You give back some of that loyalty, be a human being, be nice and get to know people.

.4. For the love of god, DO NOT USE YOUR STEEM to do @randowhale . Use your SBD for old mate rando. I was very lucky early on to be given STEEM and I gave it to rando!!. STEEM is worth more than SBD. STEEM is what Living Room of Satoshi wants in exchange for cash money into your Aussie bank account. STEEM is also what you need to Power Up - and you want to power up.

BTW. @randowhale is a service we can use to upvote our posts by a whale that costs us 2SBD per vote. Whale upvotes are worth heaps. You want a whale to click on your upvote button.

.5. Keep at it. I know you probably left all your Social Media friends behind and you're feeling a bit in the deep end. I ain't gonna lie. There's so much to learn about Steemit but it's worth it. Even if you just follow #2 you've already given yourself a head start. Focus on quality content and make sure that quality content has a nice picture and you're in with a shot. It's too easy to get discouraged here especially when you're new - everything comes in time and that won't come if you give up before you even kicked off.

Here on Steemit, you gotta be prepared to write.

Cannot agree more. Better be able to criticize, justify, and analyze if you want to be read and heard. It's all about the quality........

Yup! It sure is. But I think thats a good thing because I feel like I'm more open, in touch with myself and am a better writer because of Steemit and the demand for quality.

I did several test posts when I started and I noticed if you just posted a picture no matter how good the picture may be without heart it's not going to ge traction. I dont know why that is but from that I realised if I focused on my content more than the money part it works out.

Well sometimes it doesn't but that doesnt matter cos I wasnt sharing to get money, I was sharing because it was what I felt like sharing that day :)

Solid advice, but what about when the market swings and sbd are worth more than steem?
You've been upvoted, followed and resteemed, I've been here since June 13, 2017 and only been screwed by rando once in all my dealings this latest time. Still hoping they make it right...

Then I'll do an updated blog, but right now Steem is worth more. Rando is just so random. Its hit and miss with him sometimes. More miss than anything especially after he changed the upvote percentage. I got a 1% upvote the other day 😢 Following back!

I might add to the list that you shouldn't write for money because it's not all about money. Not everyone is supposed to become a killer content-creator here whose posts make 1000+ dollars, not to mention that most posts that do get 1000+ dollars, are kind of bribed behind the scenes! You can see that whales like randowhale or booster charge for upvotes. That tells me that most upvotes from whales are a result of secret deals!

Yes! Definitely that too!

Perhaps killer content is too much and I should rephrase and say..

"Original and thoughtful content." Because youre so right, it's not about the money (although that is a plus). I found the posts I upvote all the time people have spent time on. Every now and then I find a post with a random picture and a few lines of words and that's it and I skip right by it.

As for the whales I reckon whales that grew up together hang together.

Ive looked in the comments on some of the whales posts and the same ones comment and upvote on each other.

I get that. They have history, they've worked through Steemit together.

I see the same happening with our batch of fishies growing up to be whales.

Rando and the other one I always thought was bought whales lol

The thing is though growing now is much harder. If we had joined at the very beginning without investment, we would be doing a lot better now. But the system is designed to attract investment. That's the only way the price of STEEM would move higher and the inventors would make a fortune!

I personally can't say growing now is harder. I dont know what it was like then but Im at 426 in 22 days. It took me years to get to that on Facebook and a lot of markets and giveaways.

A big part of me wishes I got in a year ago, but I'm in now and it's still not too late we are just at the beginning.

As for investment. If youre talking about the money part Im still learning all that. Im here cos I talk a lot in my head and feel I need to share it lol the money is a bonus. Like,I know its money but I treat it like my Diablo III money, I dont use it but I like seeing it grow lol

Nice work, i hope you grow fast on steemit :)
Upvoted and ReSteemed...

Thanks @appreciator. Nice user name!

You are more than welcome and thanks.

Great post and I wish I had done pretty much the same, Still I done really well in my first week. :)

Thanks Warren :) Well done!! My first week was a shocker. My biggest mistakes was stuffing up my intoducemyself post and write something depressing lol and then giving my STEEM to rando. I still kick myself over that.

Cool post. I'm keeping it pretty lax, so that first one is pretty easy. I figure goal #1 should be to just have fun. Make the most of it, whatever that means to you.

I like that approach. I've been on a posting regime these last couple of weeks but Ive backed off cos I feel like I'm burning out trying to write and write. So now I'm just trying to have fun and post things that are flowing instead of trying to guide the tide.

So many real & applied facts, thanks for sharing

Thank you!

You are always welcome!
