The President is the official head of all branches of the legislative, administrative and judicial branches of Bangladesh and the commander-in-chief of the Bangladeshi military . The President has the power to suspend, reduce or pardon the sentence of a convicted person. Currently, the President is elected by the National Assembly . Before the introduction of parliamentary democracy in 1991, the president was directly elected by the people. The term of office of the President is five years. It has been observed in the past that only the nominee of the ruling party has become the President. Many were elected president unopposed. The incumbent president can run for re-election.
After every general election, the President delivers the inaugural address of the first session of Parliament. He also delivered the first inaugural address of the first parliamentary session of the year. His speech is actually just an outline of the new government policy. Every bill passed by the National Assembly becomes a law with the assent of the President.
