I do agree that it's a mixture of both, but it may come with the intention. I think we know to ourselves if a comment is worth something. As comment that goes like this

nice, great post!

Isn't really worth anything. So, it's during this time that we need to temper our greeediness.

On the other hand, comments that contain insights or other things valuable somehow merit a self vote. It's like a pat on the back.

Unfortunately, people have different views of a "helpful" comment, and that's where arguments or conflicts arise.

Sort:  

Sure you can divide whether your comment has some value or not.
For example yours had a value ;-)

I think what's ok is when you make a valuable comment on a post with 50-200 comments and upvote it for visibility.
I don't have a problem if people upvote their comments 1,2,3 a day, but then they should upvote other comments and post as well.
In addition self-voting on comments should not too frequently.
