What's What! Video Game Facts (24/365)
Mario get real.
Super Mario Bros is the first video game to receive an adaptation to the cinema, Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! is a anime film based on the brothers, directed by Masami Hata and produced by Masakatsu Suzuki and Tsunemasa Hatano the film was released in Japanese cinemas in 1986 it was later released only on VHS,considered one of the rarest pieces of Mario merchandise ever made.
Anyway the adventure is centered in Mario and Luigi who go on a quest to save Princess Peach from King Koopa, the movie starts with a clear product placement of Mario playing with his NES so you know that's nothing new, in addition to a strong advertising campaign from the production with, phone cards, watches, rice containers, ramen noodles, a manga, an art book, three riddle books, a picture book, and a limited edition soundtrack.
It would not be until a few years later that we would see the mustachioed plumber and his brother on the big screen again, directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, Super Mario Bros.(Film), follow Mario (Bob Hoskins) and Luigi (John Leguizamo) towards a parallel universe ruled by the ruthless King Koopa (Dennis Hopper) and be able to save Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis).
The live action was released on May 28, 1993, in the United States and it was destroyed by critics, with a incoherent argument could not entertain movie fans and the similarities between film and video games are so vague which caused a huge discontent of the fans of the video game.
The movie suffered a loss of $ 42 million dollars at the box office, and although it isn't the worst movie about video games ever, that's right! Alone in the Dark I'm watching you, it set a precedent so that video game films were not taken seriously.
I want to add that something similar happened with the comic book movies, most were attacked by the critics, but when those same comics fell into the hands of directors who gave it the seriousness they deserved, they became the multi-billion dollar industry that is now, so if someday they do God of War (the film) I hope it's fall into the hands of a Christopher Nolan or a Guillermo del Toro
