Also, don't ask for upvotes/follows - if your content is quality you don't need to ask for them. Once you do that, you might look into using services like @randowhale, @booster, whaleshares, and others to give your posts more visibility. That kind of promotion can cost a little bit of money, but you get most back in SP, and it should help too Be careful with resteem services - those can be very spammy and may draw the wrong kind of attention.
Additionally, spend some time curating. Don't vote too much, and also don't use all your voting power upvoting your own posts/comment. Don't post comments that read like they're generated by a bot - those will get you downvotes. Look yourself up on https://steemstats.com/ to find which of your comments have been downvoted.
