Are You a Minnow At The Moment? - Shocking Contest Results

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Last week I announced Free Give-Away Contest for all newer Steemians who joined Steemit from July 1st, 2017 onward. That was the first rule of the contest.

Are You A Minnow? - Contest Results

109 members joined the contest but according to the first rule 11 of them were not eligible as they joined Steemit before July 1, 2017, and therefore disqualified.

The second rule was to upvote the post. Here is the screenshot (taken after the post dues) of all the members who upvoted the post.

Voting Participants

From remaining 98 members who passed the first rule, 5 of them didn't vote for the post and by that didn't fulfill the second rule what disqualified them as well.

To win the reward, as the final third rule but the main reason for the contest, participants had to answer with easy "YES" or "NO," the simple question: "Are You a Minnow At The Moment?"

From remaining final 93 eligible members, only 14 of them gave the correct answer.

It's an entirely and unfortunately not in a good way, shocking result!

Why I launched this contest?

I have noticed, many new members who arrived at Steemit in past months just started using it the way they thought it would be most successful for them but with little or even any prior checking and learning the core functionality of the system or even less some basic Steemit Rules and Etiquette.

It seems like many are thinking how they find the perfect way how to make a lot of money from thin air or almost nothing. And yes, you are maybe right as with finding and joining Steemit, you really found most advanced and perfect Shuttle with nearly unlimited possibilities to launch you into space!

But what's the use of it if you don't know how to operate with that futuristic Shuttle???

If you don't change that approach, you won't get any further than where are you now. Therefore, my advice to you would be - LEARN STEEMIT and don't be afraid to ask for help and guidance. We were all beginners once!

Not to jump to conclusion, when I said "ask for help" I certainly didn't mean "ask around for votes," as that's among the first things you shouldn't do at all and by any means. That way not only that you wouldn't launch your Steemit Shuttle, but you would more likely bury it.

I also noticed many members are talking about themselves as minnows, although they are not in fact. Most surprising is to hear that from members who are here for two, three, four or even more months, but still don't know their actual status. The question is...

If you don't even know where you are how would you know where are you going or even less how to get there???

So, I would repeat - LEARN STEEMIT!
I know it's not easy to start from scratch neither simple to comprehend all at once, but give yourself time, as ignorance wouldn't bring you anywhere neither would run your Steemit Shuttle to space.

I'm also aware many would simply neglect all such pieces of advice or even totally refuse to follow them, thinking how they already found or would found some easy shortcut. Believe me, there is no such one! Not, on Steemit!

I also know, all of those who by some pure luck, in first weeks or even months, managed to launch somehow their Shuttle a bit off the ground with some out of rules actions, would laugh on all of these. But being off the ground and flying a bit still doesn't mean knowing to operate the Steemit Shuttle. It only means, as higher you have managed to get (the wrong way) the hardest and more painful the crash would be when you fall down. Therefore, again...

Instead of trying to find crashing sideways and shortcuts - LEARN STEEMIT!

So, what determines are you a Minnow or not?

To understand that we would need to know first what kinds of fishes (levels) we have here on Steemit.

According to the SteemitBoard we have:

  • Dead Fishes - those who have been inactive for more than 30 days, while inactive means didn't publish any post, didn't write any comment and didn't cast a single vote.
  • Red Fishes or Planktons - are those who own between 0 and 999,999 VESTS
  • Minnows - are those who own between 1,000,000 and 9,999,999 VESTS
  • Dolphins - are those who own between 10,000,000 and 99,999,999 VESTS
  • Orcas - are those who own between 100,000,000 and 999,999,999 VESTS
  • Whales - are those who own more than 1,000,000,000 VESTS

(More about it you can find in the latest post on this subject under the SteemitBoard official account here on Steemit.)

If you are using Busy.org instead of "Red Fish" your level will be described as "Plankton."

As you may see, your level is NOT determined by your Reputation Level and either not by your Steem Power.

Your level is determined by a number of VESTS that you own!

What are the VESTS?

Officially, a VEST is a unit by which is measured our Steem Power.

Putting it in a simpler and more understandable terminology, I would say that VESTS are the number of (some sort of) "Steemit shares" we hold which will determine the strength and value of our Steem Power.

How we can gain VESTS?

  1. We can buy VESTS by buying STEEM, bringing them to our Steemit Wallet and by Powering Up transferring them into Steem Power. (According to some my own findings, calculations, and understanding 1 STEEM is approximately worth 2,000 VESTS. But please, don't take it for granted and make your own research.)
  2. We can collect VESTS for Free just by being active on Steemit platform.

What kind of activity would bring us VESTS?

The shortest answer to that one would be, any and every activity (according to Steemit Community Rules) brings us certain amount of VESTS. Meaning...

  • Posting articles!
  • Commenting on other members' posts!
  • Voting on other members' posts!
  • Replying to comments left by other members on our posts!
  • Voting on comments left by other members on our posts!
  • Replying to comments that other members left on other members' (or our) posts!
  • Voting on comments that other members left on other members' (or our) posts!
  • Resteeming other members' posts!

Each of above-listed actions would bring us some number of VESTS, by which would be calculated our Steem Power and increased our Voting Power, and accordingly our earning potential.

Where we can check a number of VESTS we are currently holding?

Although it's not the only way and place where you can check how much VESTS you own currently, it's the one I like the most, so I'll share it with you.

SteemitBoard.com is a website/tool created by @arcange where you would be, simply by entering your username and hitting enter, redirected to your personal Steemit Board Page where among other interesting and fun things you would see your current level and amount of VESTS you already own.

Now, when we know where and how to check are we Minnows or not, and when we know that Minnows are the members who own between 1,000,000 and 9,999,999 VESTS, lets finally see the results of the last week competition.

Winners & The Results For The Contest: "Are You a Minnow At The Moment?"

As I really didn't expect only 15% of all eligible participants would know the correct answer, I decided to double the announced reward for those 14 members who gave the right answer.

As well, I decided to reward all eligible participants (79 of you) with 0.010 SBD as a small comforting prize and thank you for the participation, and above all, as the motivation to start LEARNING about Steemit!
Therefore, in the transaction memo, I would add the link to this post where, for the beginning, you may find why your answers were wrong.

Thanks a lot @ana-maria! Though we didn't get the right answer, you still consider giving us a reward. 👍❤

Yeah, I hope it would motivate at least some to really dig a bit deeper and learn a bit more, and not just assume things. 😊

@ana-maria First of all, a Million Thanks for such a wonderful and brilliant-minded contest. Luckily, I am indeed one of the fortunate winners!!! I am really so very happy & proud! :)

Thank you so much for sending the "Reward"/"Award"!!! Truly Appreciate that remarkable gesture!!!

We really-really need more Mentors like You, here on Steemit !

At the start of the contest, there were several questions by fellow steemians, but I am totally bedazzled the way you have put across this such a BRILLIANT, Well Planned, Well researched and Very well documented Post!!! Above All The Contest...So Well Organized !!! Kudos !!!

Sincere Thanks & Best Regards,

STEM E.png

I'm glad you liked it and thank you very much for your comment and kind words! 😊

That was informative. I didn't even know I was below a minnow.
Yes, steemit is a most complicated platform. If it wasn't thus, there would be no need for this post and your contest before.
But then again, maybe it should be complicated. By that I mean, we are mining crpytocurrency here. We are using proof of brain instead of proof or work or proof of stake, but we are mining nonetheless.
If you were to set up a mining rig, say Ethereum, Dash, or Monero; that would be really complicated. Trust me, I know, because I'm looking into building a mining rig for Monero and Golem at the moment.
So, yeah, thanks for the wake-up call in recognizing that this is complicated. And we should all keep on learning.

I can't agree more with you! 😊
The thing is that people don't realize, don't understand or just don't know, that every action we make on Steemit (posting, commenting, voting) is, in fact, a transaction.
And regarding the block activity we are in high 1st place with more than a double activity that even Bitcoin has and over 30% larger than Ethereum perform.
Blocktivity.info is the site recently discovered by another Steemian, that shares the info about different cryptocurrencies' blockchain activity, so I'm leaving you the link here as it might be interesting to you if you already don't know about it.

Interesting. I just took a look over there. Still, I wonder what those stats are really telling me. Could it just be showing that a lot of activity out of proportion to the value created?
I don't know, I'm not young enough yet to answer.

Apparently, I'm not "young enough" either to know the right answer, but as far as I can understand only the block activity or in other words, number of performed transactions. At least that's how I explain it to myself.

PS upvoted you, for what my vote is worth.

PPS Also Following you now.

As well, thank you for the upvote and follow. 😊

Regarding another contest, yes - I'm thinking about it but would need to find some sponsors or it would have to wait a bit until I accumulate some SBD for it again. 😉

Wow!! this is so educational and shocking at the same time!!.... I always thought I was a minnow, but it seems I'm just a Red Fish right now....

But why everything talking about newbies refer them as minnows?.... There should be a Red Fish association, I demand justice... (kidding)

LOL - Well, I don't know either why is that so. I just assume it might be because at the very beginning many members were able to reach the Minnow level quite soon and all the discussions going around at that time were in comparison in between Minnows and Whales (like there is no level before Minnow and no levels in between minnow and whales). So, I think it gets sneaked in the common vocabulary that way.

Hmmmm... that may be so~

and all the discussions going around at that time were in comparison in between Minnows and Whales (like there is no level before Minnow and no levels in between minnow and whales). So, I think it gets sneaked in the common vocabulary that way.

i never heard about red fish in the 2.5 weeks i am on here. Otherwise i would have known i was. :-) Steembord : that is the place where we see our rewards, but a reward for getting something does not give you SP or SBD . SBD i still do not know where it stands for !? Steem B? dollar,? Do you mean the red fish in the aquarium on steemitboard? Does that change in something else ? Working the wallet out is a whole fight on it self ! Some one said why you have money in savings, that has no use, so i changed that, but right ? i do not know... the name vests i did hear before and was trying to find what that was. I thought as much as like a share but did not know where to bye. What vests actually Mean? i still do not know. The word it self is unknown for me. When you can get vests with being interactive with people on steemit i think i am. When i like something or dislike it than i will comment. And i will always answer people who comment on my posts, more as i can say of the most, which is a pity because it does not work motivating, you think you are not seen. In the beginning i upvoted everyone i read, not knowing about a bar on https://steemnow.com/ When i found out i had to wait for 48 hours until it would be full again. But when you upvote when your bar is empty, does it let you wait longer before filled up again? Because when your vote bar is empty you better not vote they say. When you best not use your upvote when your bar is empty, than i think that steemit needs to place a like button. It is nice just to show your appreciation for a post. When i like a certain blog i will resteem it, just like the contest blogs that i also will resteem. But i would like a post ability to go with your resteem, so that you can say something to your followers why you resteem. It could be something you thoroughly disgust , and by placing it without your text your followers may think you agree in it. I think you must see out of my post that i have 1001 questions :-) And probably 15000 questions if i would understand more. :-)

OMG - lol 😁 - you really have 15000 questions. It seems to me, I would have to create the whole tutorial with Lesson 1, 2, 3... step by step, as it's really impossible to answer all of them (asked and unasked) here at once.

However, regarding your question does Red Fishes change into something else, I can say depends on each user activity and decision. Meaning, if the member who reaches the higher level (Minnow) decides to Power Down he/she would return back to Red Fish level, as by power down a certain amount of VESTS and accordingly certain amount of SP would be deducted and transferred to STEEM (wallet) where from can be sent to available exchanges and exchanged to Fiat currencies (like USD, EUR etc.). The rest, I think I explained in the article or it could be found on SteemitBoard account here on Steemit. (I left a link to their more comprehensive post but maybe you didn't notice it.)

About the name "VEST" or "VESTS" I really don't know where from it originates, as well as is it some acronym or not. But it seems to me (although it's only my opinion), it might be the same question as it would be - what does it mean the word "Google." In fact, Google doesn't mean anything or at least nothing until we don't know it's only misspelling of the word googol. But then again, how many of us would know what even word googol means?!
Or even better, would the meaningless of the word "google" stop us using the Google? I guess not.

What I want to say with that is that I think it's more important that we learn and understand the functionality of all those things (no matter how they are named) and its mutual correlation that might work in our benefit.

Lol i was only looking for the meaning of the word so i could translate it to dutch and than maybe understand what meant with it. But if found a lot of information here. :https://steemit.com/interest/@sigmajin/understanding-the-steem-economic-system-vests-sbd-steem-dilution-interest-and-all-those-crazy-things

Great! 🙂 It's a good article!
Just keep in mind this is a one-year-old article and the current Interest rate is miles far away from being that high, so we wouldn't be able (just by holding our STEEM in Steem Power) to double it (turn 240 into 480) in 12 months or 1 year. This has been changed long ago and active, if I recall well, only first 2 or 3 months after Steemit launch. After that, it was decreased to something around 9.5% per year, to be even further reduced after HF19 to current, somewhere in between 1% and 2% per year.
All of that is connected with and created to compensate the inflation, I was talking about in on of my previous replies to you (inside the conversation you had here with @rocking-dave).

ye it is a old article but it explains the words. Witch is helpful to me. Thank you.
