Let's talk about bullying.....

Bullying is a global problem that requires an immediate call to action. Take a look at the following outlines;

1...Bullying is when someone is being hurt either by words or actions on purpose, usually more than once, feels bad because of it, and has a hard time stopping what is happening to him or her. It is a deliberate and repeated attempt to cause harm to others of lesser power.

2... Bullying facts: Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying.

  • Approximately 160,000 teens skip school everyday because of bullying.
  • 1 in 10 students drop out of school because of repeated bullying.
  • By age 14 less than 30% of boys and 40% of girls will talk to their peers about bullying.
  • Physical bullying increases in elementary school, peaks in middle school and declines in high school. Verbal abuse on the other hand, remains constant.

3...Types of bullying : There are many different types of bullying that can be experienced by anyone;

i. Physical bullying: This includes kicking, tripping, pinching, touching in an unwanted and inappropriate way.

ii Verbal bullying : Bullying with cruel words which includes name calling, threatening, and making disrespectful comments about someone's attributes (weight, height, religion, disability, ethnicity )

iii Relational bullying : Relational or emotional bullying is a different way of bullying than other types of bullying because the actions are usually quiet and hidden from others.

iv Cyber-bullying: Cyber bullying is a form of bullying or harassment using electronic means like cell phones, computer, tablets, messaging apps, gaming sites, chat rooms such as facebook, Instagram, youtube and snapchat. It has become increasingly common, especially among teenagers. This includes posting rumors, threats and victim's personal information.

v Collective bullying: Bullying perpetrated by more than one person, or by a group of people, against someone. This includes, leaving someone out of group activities on purpose, telling others not to be friends with someone and embarrassing someone in public.

vi Workplace bullying : Workplace bullying refers to a pattern of repeated hostile or bullying behaviors against an employee, or a group of employees. These include behaviors such as physical, verbal and psychological humiliation and abuse.

5...Bullying effects: Bullying makes the lives of its victims miserable. It undermines their confidence and destroys their sense of security. Bullying can cause loneliness, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, suicide and violence.

6...Why people bully: To understand the answer to this you have to step inside the mind of a bully. You have to look at their past and why they’ve become the person that they are. People bully for a lot of reasons;

i feeling powerless in their own issues
ii Jealousy and frustration
iii Lack of understanding
iv Looking for attention
v mimicking behaviours of family
vi The bully has been bullied before

7....How to handle bullying: So, now you know bullying is a big problem that affects everyone, but what do you do if someone is bullying you? Here are some few tips for understanding and dealing with bullies, no matter how old you are;

i Know your fundamental human rights
ii Don't show your feelings
iii Tell someone
iv Ignore the bully
v Stand tall and be brave
vi Feel good about you
vii Get a buddy

8...How to stop bullies: Here are some ways to stop bullying;

i There should be an established system for anyone to report.
ii Parents and professionals should teach the children skills for handling bullies.
iii Schools should have strong repercussions for bullying
iv Counselling should be available to kids who are bullied, for the bullies and for those who help the bullies
