Replicants Walk Among Us: The Appallingly Lazy Tactics of Comment Spammers

I don't have to tell you comment spammers are a problem. The first month or so I was on here, the only comments I received were from bots. But this article isn't about bots. It's about human beings who try to work out the least possible effort they can put into mass produced comments and still seem genuine.

I know they aren't bots because they respond comprehensibly when confronted. It took me a while to compile these example screenshots because when called out, they typically delete their spam comments and vanish. I've divided them into categories below:

The first, and lowest effort, is the generic praise post. It contains nothing referring to the article and is as vague as possible so at least it won't contain details which make it obvious he didn't read it:

Notice he even upvoted my insulting image macro. That's comedy, folks. The second lowest effort form of spam is the one which copies and pastes the title into it, so it seems to refer to what was written, but contains no reference to the actual content:

Another example of the Title Paste tactic:

The next lowest effort, one rung up from the Title Paste, is the Line Paste. It copies a single line from the story followed by generic praise:

This one I call the "Stuck With Me" tactic which is a variation on the Line Paste. It copies and pastes a random line from the article and claims it resonated with the commenter, but not why:

Next up in the ladder of sophistication, the "I will now read it" with a followup post claiming he's done so:

Another example from a different chapter's comment section:

Most heinous of all, sometimes they just flat out copy and paste somebody else's comment but make small changes so Steemit's plagiarism detection bots don't catch it. To be clear the example below is not the copy, it's a legitimate comment by my buddy @deadspace, the one after this is the copy (which the author has since deleted).

Here's the slightly modified copy:

As you can see, there is no limit to how brazen they will be. Even some who I confronted that promised never to do it again, I later spotted pulling their usual tricks in the comments of other peoples' posts. This convinces me I have been too lax with these people.

I don't want to punish anybody. I am not the cops. I do not put myself in a seat of judgement over anyone and have flagged only sparingly so far. My reasoning was that the names of these accounts suggest most of them live in under developed countries.

They have a language barrier to overcome, and it makes sense they might think "I can just copy an English speaker's post" to solve it. They are just looking to make some money to improve their lives, so how can somebody from a first world country interfere in good conscience?

But then I realized what a disservice I am doing to the other Steemians that these spammers also inflict their spam on. By not flagging them I send the message that spam will be tolerated, and I don't currently do my part to weed them out of the Steemit ecosystem.

Consequently, going forward I will be flagging these types of posts. Not to worry, I will recognize my usual commenters but anybody else not wishing to be flagged wrongly, please post more than a single sentence and include commentary on the details of the article which makes it clear to me that you read it and aren't a bot.

BONUS CHALLENGE: See how many of the spam tactics mentioned above you can find in the comments on this very article! And remember: Don't be a replicant. Be a replican.

Stay Cozy!

Sort:

they aren't a problem for me
...more than once.
when I identify them.
I mute them.
never to see them again.

I hope if you see them copy somebody else's comment, you flag them before you mute them. That shit won't fly.

why would I flag them?
that takes vote power from me!
when I mute them I ban them from my sight
FOREVER
at no cost to me.

To do a service to other Steemians by removing spammers from the community.

go ahead...help yourself.

yeah, I'm starting to see how this works.

I really loved your post Replicants Walk Among Us. I couldn't agree more.

As you can see, there is no limit to how brazen they will be.

So true, much information, resteem and follow.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Seems legit

I try not to spam because it is not good to spam. I follow you alexbeyman

Wait till we get a huge influx of users after Velocity...you ain't seen nothing yet.

@alexbeyman,
If someone spam my comments I will warn him 1st, if he do it again, I will flag his post then, if he do it again, I will go to his account and start flagging until i feel enough!
Little bit rough :P Yeah but I gave him 2 chances to correct what he did! If he can't obey, then I can't help him!

Cheers~

Yeah got to say I agree with @everittdmickey, mute is your friend. Flagging to me seems like it could potentially harm you in the long run especially if they know a whale lol... unfortunately.

These spam comments are usually why I self vote too, so that it goes to the top and will actually be seen by the author and other people that aren't spamming. Not something I like doing but must be done not to be swallowed into oblivion.

One thing I think that might work is like @everittdmickey is doing by muting them, but with a twist, once a week or every couple weeks, or even just once a month, make a post title The following people are muted from my site for comment spam, that way your regular readers will know who to add to their mute list.

You save vote power, and earn a reward for letting us know who they are. I think if more active authors did this the comment spam crap might go away. Downvote obscurity is still visible, muted spammers and bots are not.

Hahahahaha. What the fuck? Are you serious? Someone just copied/pasted my comment like that in the same thread? Oh, my god. This is fucking gold. I don't care how much english you do or do not speak, that is universally a stupid, shitty thing to do and people should know better. So god damn lazy. I always thought the spam on my articles was bad, but this takes the motherfucking cake.

On a side note, I watched Blade Runner for the very first time a few days ago. Really don't know why I waited so god damn long to watch it. I had watched snippets previously and always thought it looked great, but I had no idea how far it delved into being sci-fi pornography basically.

He say you brade ranna

Chomps down on noodles while being annoyed

For about a month now, I have been thinking about doing an article similar to this one but I keep putting it off because I am also trying to establish a blog brand. I don't want to dilute my content for my regular readers. Of course I just had to participate in some holiday contests so I guess I'm not doing the best job of staying on topic......

Anyway, I have also been collecting some funny snips from my comment section.

These three different accounts clearly used the "generic praise post" you outlined. All in a row to boot! I must have good information.
Good Information

This one is a category you didn't cover which I call "digital begging."
begging

Haha I love someone has the audacity to just copy @deadspace comment and just use the thesaurus on each word, wow! I agree its hard with a language barrier but thats no excuse for that.

You have made a right choice of flagging them. Some of them are bots and some of them are craving for money. They be like we are idiots we wont know about spams. You made a really great effort for this article with all those screenshots and haha that was funny. Mainly the copy paste 😂😂. And one thing i like to do pointing out spammers like i used to do in your last posts. 😂😂
