You're not doing anything wrong, it's just hard to get noticed at first. I posted for months only making .05 per post. The best thing you can do is read and comment on other blogs. If you stick with it you will start to get followers and better payouts. Steemit can be confusing at first, but the more you're on here the more you'll learn. Just find some blogs that interest you, follow them, and engage with others. Don't give up!
