Open Source Design Ideas worth stealing, er, emulating.

in #steemit-ideas8 years ago (edited)

There is a small spin off of reddit called Voat.co that has some very good design ideas that Steemit.com could use. The code is open-source, so it is easily available for the Steemit.com developers to view.
It is available here https://github.com/voat/voat Cut-n-Paste the good stuff!

The big 4 features that would look great on Steemit.com are:

  1. Expandable images and videos
    a. Images have a small +, that allows you to enlarge them on the same page. Less clicking if there are no comments.
    b. Videos from youtube and other sites can also be enlarged and watched without loading a new page.

  2. Markdown Toolbar - Message formatting buttons right above the message
    a. Basic formatting buttons available on the same page as the message. Click for bold, click for centering, etc.

    b. Basic link feature available by highlighting a word and clicking link button, then adding link

  3. Separating link posts and discussion posts.
    a. This allows users to quickly post a link. This allows for duplicate link identification and warning\blocking repeats.

    b. Discussion posts have a text area with the markdown toolbar.

  4. Built in Night mode.
The dark theme is excellent for late night viewing. (full blast white in your face right before bedtime is not healthy)

There is also the new message id bar, but I heard that is already being worked on.

These are the 4 features I miss the most while surfing on Steemit. Since it is all open source, hopefully a lot of time and effort can be saved by not designing and coding all these improvements from scratch. It would be great to see these implemented before the big wave of publicity hits on the 4th.

I think the easy formatting buttons could be very helpful for new users.

Yes, very helpful.
Not many reddit or facebook people are even going to attempt to learn that archaic markdown stuff.

You're right. Ctrl C + V from stackedit.io to Steemit sucks.. And I still have to re-align making everything a mess.

This is a good find; thanks for sharing!
I bet we will see an improved editor in the coming days or weeks though. Since this is a beta release, we expect to have to deal with interfaces like this. But once the masses come, and to Get the masses to come, these 4 features and others will need to be in the Steemit editor.
