Oral sex spreads bacteria that can not be stopped

Oral sex causes serious cases of gonorrhea, and the lack of effective use of condoms leads to the spread of the disease, according to the World Health Organization.

The World Health Organization has warned of gonorrhea, where treatment has become more difficult, and in some cases impossible.

Infectious sexual diseases acquire fast resistance to antibiotics.

Experts say the situation is "very bleak", and few looming medicines.

About 78 million people are infected with sexually transmitted infections each year and can lead to infertility.

WHO analyzed data from 77 countries and found that antibiotic resistance in gonorrhea was widespread.

Three cases reported in Japan, France and Spain have shown that the infection has been completely cured, Dr. Theodora Wei of the World Health Organization said.

"Gonorrhea is caused by bacteria so smart that every time a new antibiotic is introduced to treat gonorrhea, bacteria appear resistant to the disease," she said.

Of concern is that most cases of gonorrhea occur in poor countries where it is not easy to detect cases of resistance to antibiotics.

She added that these cases may be only the tip of the iceberg.

Laryngitis
Gonorrhea can affect the genitals, anus and the throat, but health officials are more concerned about genital infection.

Antibiotics can lead to bacteria in the back of the larynx, including gonorrhea-related diseases that acquire resistance, Dr. Wei said.

"When antibiotics are used to treat infections such as normal laryngitis, this is mixed with parasitic bacteria in the throat area, leading to disease resistance," she said.

The spread of gonorrhea bacteria in this environment through oral sex can lead to gonorrhea on a very large scale.

"In the United States, the source of antibiotic resistance in gay men was an infection in the pharynx," she said.

The ineffective use of condoms, compounded by concerns about HIV / AIDS, is also helping to spread the infection.

What is gonorrhea?
One gets infected with parasitic bacteria, and infection is spread by sex either in the vagina, or through the mouth or anus.

Symptoms can include thick green or yellow discharge from the genitals or pain when urinating, or menstrual bleeding.

However, nearly one in ten men having sex with more than one woman and more than three-quarters of women, and gay men do not show symptoms that can be easily detected.

Untreated infections can cause infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease and these symptoms can spread to the fetus during pregnancy.

WHO calls on different countries to monitor outbreaks of antibiotic resistance and to invest in new drugs.

The World Health Organization said vaccines were needed to stop gonorrhea.
