there are already a lot of projects out there in the world doing decentralized data hosting but the 'dat project' looks interesting to me because it builds on some existing technologies and takes it further -- can we say decentralized peer to peer? :) i'm super interested in that.

Dat is a nonprofit-backed data sharing protocol for applications of the future.

they even have an experimental peer to peer browser called -- https://beakerbrowser.com out there, with the way things are heading with access to files on centralized platforms and with ISP's under constant scrutiny by gov level issues considering the future of a decentralized web when you can get 'access' means we still will have a way to put and store values in these decentralized applications.
