This work with device built-in magnetic sensor or magnetometer. The sensor allow you to detect objects generating magnetic fields, the greater the value of magnetic fields the stronger will be the metal.

I have remember once I was enterning in trauma centre MRI there was no allowance with the metal. Before interning in the room checking out the people with a device which reflects notification if someone having any metal. Likewise entering in magnetic field always be dangerous .

Metal detecting can be fun especially if you live near a beach as lots of things get washed up on beaches, some of them valuable. At the very least you should find coins someone has dropped.
Simple tool to detect metal. Wow.
