Common everyday items are slowly but surely receiving the 'smart' and 'Internet of Things' treatment, but when it comes to wallets, there hasn't really been a unique product that does it all, until now.

Volterman has launched a very successful Indiegogo campaign where they raised over 2M USD to fund their series of smart wallets. Their wallets, ranging from a regular bifold wallet, to a cardholder or even passport holder, all contain smart features that will soon be unmissable in a wallet.

For starters, there's global GPS tracking, meaning you can never lose your wallet again. Worried about thieves? Don't be. There's an optional built-in camera and distance alarm to make sure that your wallet stays safe. It also protects your cards against RFID intrusions.

The wallets also carry 64 GB of onboard memory, meaning you will always carry some storage around wherever you go. But perhaps the coolest feature of all is the built-in power bank. With three included cables for iPhones, USB-C or Micro USB devices, you can charge your smartphone on the go. If your device supports wireless charging, you don't even need a cable! The Bifold holds a 2600 mAh charge, enough to fully recharge a regular iPhone.

However, despite all the fancy and cool features od this wallet, their crowdfunding campaign hasn't been ideal, to say the least. The original shipping date was estimated to be before Christmas of 2017, but they've missed that deadline. In fact, they've missed a lot of new deadlines, but are finally promising to ship at the end of this month.

Another caveat is the fact that they've slightly adapted the design of the wallet, which makes it less aesthetic or useful. The camera, for example, is now being covered by bills. There's also a small 'bump' in the exterior to make the wallet safer and more secure, which is understandable, but a slight disappointment for everyone who looked forward to the original design.

Despite some of the issues, this remains a very cool product. I've personally backed this project, and although they have been met with many delays, I can't wait to spend some time with the Volterman Bifold and see if it really lives up to the (high) expectations.
