Youtube-dl is short for "youtube downloader". I often find myself in a situation where I want to download a video from youtube (because I'm scared youtube will remove the youtube ) or because I would like to download the video and extract the audio in mp3 format. I usually get my music that I listen to in my car with this method.
Here is an example (see screenshot) of using youtube-dl to download the mp3 of a video (in reality the whole video is downloaded and the video is converted to mp3 using ffmpeg in the background).
This tool is extremely powerful and there are many different things that you can do with this tool. If you are on OSX you can install it with brew install.
