Plants need nitrogen for growth, hence fertilizers. However fertilizers in excess can kill plants and even worse, can have harmful effects when consumed indirectly via the plants we eat.
Historically, nitrogen producing microbes in soil were used to promote healthy crop growth. But demands from growing agriculture changed farming and increased the use of fertilizers. However, given the harmful effects, pivot bio is a start up that has come up with nitrogen providing microbial solution to replace fertilizer use - product is called ProveN.
ProveN supplies plants with nitrogen continuously and nitrogen supply peaks with plant growth. The microbes also attach to rootsof plants so that they are not washed away with water.
The engineering here is that these microbes are DNA engineered.
Pivot Bio makes nitrogen fixation as natural as breathing for the microbe. Microbes inhale nitrogen gas from the atmosphere and release ammonia to plants.

This is a great product for the agriculture industry. Hunts like this, purely innovative that solves the problems facing the community are far greater hunts than those for entertainment. I hope this is affordable to use.
Thanks for a great comment. I hope you're right about costs. Unfortunately the website doesn't talk about that. Testing has produced much better crops with ProveN. Hopefully such innovations will help reduce fertilizer use.
I am not a fan of genetical engineering, but still there is no tampering with the plants DNA and no harmful products are used. So let's just hope these genetical changed microbes don't turn on us! ;-) Great hunt!
