ENG: 90% of the world's trade is carried by sea. This fact is the key to understand geopolitics. If maritime transport is essential to the world's economy then control of marine areas is the most important condition of world domination.

The map created by UCL's Energy Institute shows it very well. It's a mesmerizing time lapse of global shipping, plotting every single commercial cargo ship's position, speed and route around the globe for one year. You can look at individual ships and routes by type of cargo: gas, liquids, raw materials, cars, and container ships.
