I have a surveyor friend who may like this because they do lots of land measurements. Instead of using tapes, GPS can provide alternative and accurate way to measure the land. If it could measure other surfaces like waterbodies would be fine too.
This is GPS+ Google map. I think anyone can calculate whatever they want through the system.
This is best to calculate any large areas where it's difficult to calculate it by using map; like any water body or Forest.
