TIn order to test whether humans respond more sympathetically to “cute”, British firm Jaguar Land Rover has equipped autonomous driving pods with “virtual eyes”.
Recent studies have shown that humans may be less confident and trusting of autonomous technology, so product designers decided to do the obvious: equip autonomous vehicles with cute googley eyes.
Pete Bennett, Future Mobility Research Manager at Jaguar Land Rover, said: “It’s second-nature to glance at the driver of the approaching vehicle before stepping into the road. Understanding how this translates in tomorrow’s more automated world is important. We want to know if it is beneficial to provide humans with information about a vehicle’s intentions or whether simply letting a pedestrian know it has been recognised is enough to improve confidence.
The test is a collab with Jaguar’s partner Aurrigo who provides the autonomous pods.

This seems to be a great idea, making the environment around your work more relaxed and more people friendly.
It is going to be incredible to see how these developers make autonomous technology more appealing to the masses. People, for some reason, are averse to it. Something simple like this could make people more comfortable with it.
Being honest the fact that this vehicle has "eyes" makes it seem strange and even caricatured, but in general the vehicle is really great because it has a very practical and intuitive mobility system. Basically to add eyes this vehicle looks more like a robot that we can address.

Someone should probably tell Hollywood to quit making movies where AI takes over. LoL. Add to that the stories in the news where the creepy AI wants to start a cleanse of humanity to save the world. Mistrust is understandable
Maybe that would also be helped if the platform Google acquired to base its A-GPS (which locates/positions actual WiFi routers) wasn’t called SkyNet. ;)
In fact, the design of Google’s autonomous car is cute for the same reason as Jaguar’s experiment.

-quite expensive for wide adoption for its use
