Hunter's comment

Every year, 1.7 billion wooden pallets are produced for Asian exporters that are not reused. This leads to an annual deforestation of 170 million trees. The CocoPallet is a disposable pallet made from coconut waste and the natural binder lignin from the coconut shell. The 100% organic pallets are recyclable, environmentally friendly, can carry a weight of 3,000 kg, are stackable and therefore require 70% less storage space. CocoPallet is a cost-effective alternative to wooden pallets and prevents the deforestation and transport of millions of trees. Please see the manufacturer's website for more details.

Great idea, to use the waste of coconuts to build something which saves the need to cut down more trees.

If it's possible to build palettes, I'm sure coconut waste can be used as a wood substitute elsewhere too - which makes this a great development.

I'm a little sceptical of the claim that de-forestation is in any great way due to wood being sources to make more palettes - I think it's a much wider issue than that (and something just being used to strengthen the argument for one product).

Also, I'm pretty sure (not an expert, though) that palettes are not single use. I think they are used over and over, and would be very surprised if there's anywhere in the world that goods are shipped to (on palettes) which cannot, or does not re-use or recycle the wooden palette in some way.

These comments are not intended to take away from the validity and great potential this product/idea shows.

Great hunting :)

Thank you for your full answer. The wood used for pallets is certainly only a very small part of the total consumption. These export wood pallets are only used once and then burned. Returning them would be much too expensive and they are not suitable for use in truck transport. The pallets used in exchange are slightly larger and more stable. These are standardized and are used in truck transport. Each pallet warehouse is designed according to these standards.

Thanks for your reply. That situation is, indeed, absolutely ridiculous. Surely, there'd be a big market for others to use the palettes being burned - even if it were not in shipping. There'd certainly be a use in construction, and possibly demand from consumers (look at what people do with "standard" palettes, which are available).

I completely agree with her opinion. In Germany, pallet sets are now being sold so that people can build themselves a sofa and a table.

It seems this product has a lot of advantages. I know a family business that sells wooden pallets and they make a lot of money, but in the end they are taking the life of a lot of trees and that is very sad. Coconuts are delicious but there is a lot of waste between the fruit and the exterior of the coconut, glad someone is doing something useful with that. Now let's see if this is sustainable and this company can convince more people to use coconut pallets instead of wooden pallets.

Unfortunately it wont take off. There is basically one global company that controls pallets and they wont budge. They are making too much and this won't fit their business model. I like the concept though.

Excellent idea!

Pros

Here is why Coconut pallets are better than wooden pallets:

  • It's recyclable
  • It's stackable that means it carries less space
  • It's a cost-effective solution
  • Can help save million of trees from transportation
  • It's durable and can carry weight up to 3000 kg

Cons

  • No cons

Brilliant work @depot69.

In provinces in my country, I saw many coconut husks and shells that were just being thrown after the meat was taken. If we com to think of it, it is like more than half of the coconut is wasted if only the meat is utilized.

This pallet is a very good way to make use of those that are just considered waste. What else could be better than making use of waste for more useful and yet it stays biodegradable thus eco-friendly.

Reducing pollution level is a task every true meaning global citizen is advocating. This device will in no small measure in that regard. Certainly a great hunt

Eco friendly
Reusable
Less weight

Im all for using alternative materials to solve problems, and help wiht the environment. Unfortunatley they will be fighting big corporations, who have big money to throw around, and will be hard to get into the market.

I would love to see this take off though, as there are so many things such as deforestation which are harming our environment.

Will be interesting to see where this project is in a few years

Congratulations!
