Problem

All traditional ways to fight bacteria have shortfalls (after a while bacteria adapt to antibiotics and become resistant)

In the healthcare sector, hospital-acquired infections account for more than $30 billion in excess healthcare costs each year.

About 2 million people get hospital-acquired infections and around 100 thousands people die from them per year.

Solution

Sharks have the skin which prevents bacteria to land on them.
Scientists have mimicked this skin and created film products to decrease (drastically) the number of bacteria on high-touch surfaces in hospitals and other public places.

Benefits

  • cost-effective
  • no chance for bacterial resistance
  • fights against many types of bacteria

Important!

It isn't a panacea

How interesting! This is a truly cool hunt. Happy to upvote you.

According to the website, this is how the technology is actually implemented:

The Sharklet surface is comprised of millions of microscopic features arranged in a distinct diamond pattern. The structure of the pattern alone inhibits bacteria from attaching, colonizing and forming biofilms.

It's interesting that the pattern structure itself is the technology.

Hate to think that too many or any sharks were killed or tortured during the making of this product, but that's yesterday's and today's reality. Maybe tomorrow will be different.

well. I guess that these scientists need 3-4 sharks to come to a conclusion that there are no (or very small amount) of bacteria on the shark's skin. And as it would be hard to take the samples of the skin if these animals were alive, then indeed I think that they have to kill these 3-4 creatures. And then they could just take some peaces of the skin of the same these 3-4 animals to analyse them with the microscope. So the proper description for this hunt should be "..WITHOUT any complications ...for human beings".
Indeed, tomorrow could be different. For example, there are 3D computer models of viruses, so the scientists now can analyse the viruses and select appropriate targets to block them. Maybe it will be possible (I hope so) to analyse the animals (like sharks) in such a way (on computer in 3D without killing any creature) as well )

Congratulations!
