Advice for migrating bloggers on posting Existing Content onto Steemit

in #steemhelp8 years ago (edited)

As an existing blogger, you may be thinking; what of my existing blog is worth bringing across to Steemit and how can I avoid pitfuls when doing it.

Here are a few tips that come to mind

  • BE SELECTIVE: Don't just repost everything on your blog. Repost stuff that would be interesting to people NOW (whenever 'now' happens to be).

  • SENSE CHECK CONTENT: Be prepared to tweak your existing content so it reads correctly in the present day. If you wrote it a year ago and have reference's to things that happened 'yesterday' or 'two months ago' you may want to change that. Alternatively it may make sense to add the date you originally wrote to blog to your title, so Steemit readers understand the context in which it was written.

  • RE-FORMAT: You may have spent an eternity getting your original post to look perfect on Wordpress or Tumblr. SteemIt uses markdown for formatting text. It's likely that your current blog will not be formatted differently. Whilst it may be a chore to have to re-format your blog post. That bit of effort might be the difference between an up-vote and a Steemit reader going elsewhere.

  • TAG APPROPRIATELY You may have order and tagged posts just so on your site. However it is worth taking time to peruse the tags on Steemit and ensuring your blog posts are categorised appropriately, this will ensure you get maximum exposure to the audience you desire. You first tag will be your main tag, so choose this wisely.

  • REPOST, DON'T JUST LINK: Whilst it may be tempting to say 'screw it' and simply post a link to your existing blog on Steemit. This is unlikely to capture the up-votes you require. Even if the reader clicks the link, reads your post and likes it, they are unlikely to thank you for having to navigate away with an upvote.

  • ADD GENERIC CLOSING PARAGRAPH: You may want to make reference to your existing website/ social media handles. This will allow other people to see other content you have. It may be worth templating a closing paragraph that you copy/ paste to the end of each post. Depending on your content, it may be equally appropriate to add a generic opening paragraph in the summary field.

Whilst there are no 'rights' or 'wrongs' about how you bring across your content, just a little effort around what and how you are re-blogging can make a big difference to your earning potential on Steemit.

Please share your thoughts in the comments section and/ or up-vote if you found this useful. Remember it pays to do so!

If you enjoyed what you read here, don't just 'retweet' it, don't just 'like it' elsewhere. Make sure you sign up and UPVOTE it, here on Steemit and share in the rewards! (Signed up already? Add a strapline to your posts to let others know about Steemit)

I like the idea of leaving a link to your handle or website at the bottom, at least until we have links on our profile etc
my twitter :-)

Make sure people know that you are the real author. For example you could post a short note on your blog or Twitter where you tell that you have been started to post on Steem. In this way Steem users won't have any doubts if the content is plagiarism or authentic crosspost.

I wish there were a way to migrate an entire blog over to Steem with just a few clicks, particularly for blogs that have run afoul of AdSense and now can't even generate revenue.

Good to know. I just joined, and I found your post, because I was wondering whether or not it was even OK to repurpose old blog posts for Steemit. I think I want to move all my social media and blogging activity to Steemit, because it just seems more practical. I've never liked having a million and one accounts anyway. Great post! thanks for sharing the wisdom! :)

How do I re-steem this?

Thank you, I wasn’t sure if I could bring other posts from my other site onto Steemit. Now I know I can, that’s great.
