Robert Louis StevensonHello friends. What thought first popped into your head as you woke up this morning? Did a long to-do list fill your mind? Or maybe even before your feet hit the floor, has the tightness of worry begun to grip your body? Oh dear, for the sake of our health and well-being, we can’t afford to reinforce cynicism and mock light-heartedness. Know that the pursuit of happiness is not only an inalienable right, it’s also our responsibility.
Just like today, all our bags are packed ready to go for our summer vacation trip when suddenly an unexpected announcement from school stopped it. A lot of things to do, what an endless work! Everybody seems unhappy already. It seems that there is no more time for vacation. And to think what date are we now? Only a few more days to go and time to be back to school again. But I chose to let go of my emotion. Actually, I really wanted to nag! nag! nag! Then I realized it won't help nor it will change the situation.
Comfort your self when no one does!
Am I too selfish to nag? Hu! How can I not be selfish when I am entitled to have a break? Wow, entitlement again! I need to battle with this feeling. According to an activist-historian "Howard Zinn" on his essay about the power of optimism.
"An optimist isn’t necessarily a blithe, slightly sappy whistler in the dark of our time. To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty but also of compassion, courage, and kindness."
So I need to find a reason to be happy no matter what the circumstances are.Though it would be better if we just expect the worst, yet always leave space to hope for the best! This way, that small hope allows us to look past the business of life and cast aside our worries.
Let us choose to emphasize those that will only better determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. Remember the future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.
