STEEMGIGS: I WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO PREPARE EWEDU SOUP!
Hello guys, so for the first time, I decided to try out something different, am an Igbo boy(eastern part of Nigeria) and a typical one at that, but having spent over two months in the western part of Nigeria (Ogun state), I just felt the urge to eat like the Romans since I was in Rome.
So today, I entered a regular Nigerian restaurant, but instead of requesting for the usual Igbo soup(egusi soup), I asked them to give me the popular Yoruba EWEDU soup (I just had to taste it, C'mon!.. Lol)
So lunch was served and I had my first take on the food. Judging from my taste buds, the soup tastes so much like the popular okra soup(also known as DRAW SOUP). Only that the color was green and it didn't actually draw much.
Afterwards, my curiosity, however, made me ask the chef in charge how this amazing soup can be prepared. So here's what I found...
INGREDIENTS
- Ewedu leaves (corchorus olitorius)
- 1/2 teaspoon of powdered potash
- water
- Ewedu Broom or a blender
- Salt to taste
- Maggi (1 or 2 cubes)
- Pepper (to taste)
- crayfish (quantity to taste)
PROCEDURES
Prepare the leaves by picking them to remove every stem and washing properly so there won't be any trace of sand on it.
pour some water (water should be dependent on the quantity of ewedu leaves you have), boil till it reaches boiling point (lol), then add your leave to it.
then pour teaspoon full of your potash into a cup of water and filter it into the pot as the leaves are boiling. Then cook for 10min.
the potash will make the leaves very soft, then you can simultaneously pound the leaves in the pot using a pestle or any other thing (ewedu broom) that will be more convenient for you. The aim of this is to break the leaves to very tiny pieces. Do this for 4min of more, you'll you are satisfied with the texture, then you can stop.
Alternatively, you can use a blender.
Transfer back to the pot and add the ground crayfish, maggi, salt and pepper to taste. Allow to simmer for just five minutes and you are done with making ewedu soup.
Amazing, isn't it?... Yeahhhhh!
Then you can now serve the ewedu soup with Ebe(also known as garri).
HERE'S MY CONFUSION!
This ewedu soup is usually served with a little bit of stew and from what I have seen so far, a lot of these westerners enjoy it that way, I really don't know if I should also give it a try... Maybe it will taste nice, or maybe it could purge me...
I have never tried stew with soup before, but I may just give it a try some day... Lol

so you didn't really eat the complete ewedu soup? I mean with the stew? I wonder what's Garri? is it something made from wheat.. or special rice?
Casava flour, it is very special👌 it has two uses, you can soak, use it for eba.

Hahaha.. With the stew doesn't make it complete, it's just like eating bread wit butter, the westerners just like taking it with stew, but that doesn't make it complete.

That made me searched for ewedu because it is my very first time to come across the word. Based on internet search result so far, it looks like what we call saluyot in the Philippines. Assuming it is indeed our saluyot, I think stew will be okay with it. Maybe you can indeed give it a try and let us know. :)
