Bahay Kubo or Nipa Hut

Bahay Kubo a Filipino words meaning " cube house" or Nipa hut is considered as one of the popular icons in the Philippines cultural heritage.It was 1st known and introduced in the Philippines during American Colonial Era.It can be found in the province nowadays especially in rural areas like in Barrios and Barangay.Bahay Kubo or in other words "kamalig" is a small house, the house pillar, wall, and floor are made up split bamboo and the roof is made up of green nipa palm leaves.People who live in the province usually made the Nipa roof by itself. It is easy to make this, just take the Nipa palm leaves one by one attached into bamboo sticks and fold the nipa leaves. Starts sewing by use of the string until you can finish one row. Let it dry under the sun before placing and attaching to the roof. Place and align split bamboo at the rooftop.Start attaching the Nipa leaves by the used of hammer and nails. After making the roof start placing pillar, wall, and floor by use of split bamboo.

I let you show our Bahay Kubo in the front of our house in Surallah South Cotabato Philippines. My father is expert in building Bahay Kubo since I was a kid.He is the one who builds this Bahay Kubo with the help of my brother. The purpose is for resting place.It also serves as a living room to entertain friends and neighbors and talk about almost anything even local gossip.

Around the Bahay Kubo, we can see various of lovely flowers. Aside from building Bahay Kubo my father is also fond of cultivating crops, planting vegetable in our backyard and flowers using flower pot.

Inside he also builds a small table made of bamboo to place the foods and drinks.I miss taking coffee and some snacks foods with my friends and relatives in this place.The photo below is my niece and her friends during their bonding moments.This becomes their favorite place for hanging out during their free time.

This is life in the province a very peaceful place, fresh foods, and fresh air to inhale every day.
