While I was in Rome a couple of months ago, I paid tribute to Anthony Bourdain by visiting Osteria dal 1931, a restaurant that was featured on Bourdain's hit TV show 'Parts Unknown'.
During the season eight finale of Parts Unknown, Anthony Bourdain went to Osteria dal 1931 for prosciutto, roasted artichoke and ravioli. Bourdain is quoted saying "I love this place. I want to die here already, and I might yet".
Above is a look at the fresh prosciutto and roasted artichoke that I ordered. The artichoke spread like butter, it was absolutely delicious. Hands down, the best artichoke I've ever tried. The prosciutto was also fresh and tasty. I put both on top of a slice of bread and ate it like a sandwich. So. Damn. Good.
As a main dish I ordered house-made Fettuccine alla Gricia. Gricia is a style of pasta that is prepared with Pecorino Romano cheese, Black Pepper, Guanciale, and a bit of salt. It’s a traditional Roman dish that dates back to 400 AD. I did not hear of it until my first night in Rome, but it quickly became a favorite of mine.
I enjoyed a bottle of Chianti to go alongside the pasta. It's amazing how cheap and delicious the wine is in Italy.
For dessert I ordered a shot of espresso and a tiramisu. You can't eat dinner in Italy without having dessert! The espresso in Italy is rich and strong, something I miss very much. In America the coffee tends to be watered down. During my stay in Italy I had a few different Tiramisu's from various places. The one at Osteria dal 1931 came in a cup, sort of like pudding. It was creamy and delicious. A perfect way to end a perfect Italian dinner.
