There are always people who think that everything should be free, but the reality is that servers etc. cost money to keep running. If you couldn't pay your bills, we wouldn't even have SteemFollower.

Paying for upvote points would be an investment for visibility in the hopes of gaining more invested followers/fanbase for the future.

The money-to-Upvote points ratio would also need to be figured out. For example, if you would make it 5x there would be no risk involved in the investment.

But yeah, if there are any arguments besides "you do this for money" against it, I'd love to hear it.
