[SteemFest F.A.Q.] How to get from Schiphol Airport to the Volkshotel

in #steemfest8 years ago (edited)

With less than a month to go, everyone is so excited about the upcoming SteemFest in the amazing Amsterdam and with this great list of participants, it's sure to be a Steem event to remember.

We wanted to create a new FAQ for all travelers flying to SteemFest and bring you a few standard and efficient ways of traveling for a seamless experience.

There are two main ways you can get from the Schiphol airport to the official SteemFest hotel, the Volkshotel:

  1. Taxi
  2. Train

1. Taxi rides

Traveling by taxi is obviously the quickest and the most comfortable way to get from the airport to the hotel but it is also the most expensive one and can cost you to about 40 Euro (~53 SBD) per ride.
One way to make a taxi trip more cost efficient would be to use a service like tinker.travel:

Remember, the Volkshotel address is:
Street name: Wibautstraat, Street number: 150

2. Train

Amsterdam's train system is very well setup and connected to the other public transportation systems plus, it's very easy to get to the city center from the airport. Rather cheap also, a one way ticket is only 4.2 Euro and you can purchase them before your trip from Discover Holland.
The train station is situated directly below the airport. Take the escalators or lift to get there from your arrivals hall.
To get to the Volkshotel you take the train from the Schiphol Airport to the Amsterdam Central station:

Then change to take the Metro (lines 54 or 53) and get off at Wibautstraat which is 4 stops away:

When getting out of the subway station look for exit “Gijsbrecht van Aemstelstraat”, make a u-turn and you will see Volkshotel on your left (white and glass building in the pic below):

Weather warning

For all of you who might forget that the Netherlands is in the northern side of Europe and SteemFest is in November (beginning of winter), please be sure to bring appropriate clothes for low temperatures. The Amstel river ride might be rather chilly and for all of you nightwalkers out there, you could experience temperatures as low as 6 Celsius (45 Fahrenheit).

There is also a very nice bicycle path all that way as well, though I'm not sure about bicycle hire options, I have traveled to and from Schiphol many times chasing up my passport due to not having address registration there. I believe there is bicycles, though I would not advise doing it first time without a GPS. It takes a little over an hour to get into the centre of town.

Mind you, it isn't so nice to ride a bicycle at that time, and it is fairly likely to be raining. But still... I just thought I should mention this option. I rode a bicycle through Amsterdam often 10-20km/day all through winter two years ago... you just need to have good gloves, thermals, nice thick jumper and good boots and scarf and beanie. Some sunglasses or goggles can be good if you like to go fast!

Bicycle itis, although I'll most likely arrive to Amsterdam on a train or a bus.

A bicycle would be nice @l0k1 as I'm sure it will be a nice scenic view but it's Nov so cold and potentially rainy so maybe not the best option! Looking forward to seeing you there man, heard you're gonna make it!

Yeah, next time should be July. Yes, I am almost through Serbia and if I can raise 43 more euros, I will be there well ahead of schedule. I am meeting a steemian from Novi Sad this evening, and I can tell so many stories from being stranded in Budapest for a month last year, I am sure I can pull it off!

You'll make it and it will be a hell of a story!

Lows of 6 celcius! That's like summer to a Scotsman!! :0)

haha, that's true!

Last time I was there I took a shuttle bus (or van?) from/to the airport. I seem to remember it cost somewhere in between both options you listed.

Also if anyone is arriving on Friday around 17:45 and want to ride together to the hotel let me know ;)
