That man can just be saying all that just to encourage himself as well. I have met few persons who are like that most times.

They know for sure this thing is bad.., but they don't want to paint it bad because it will cause more negativity in them. So, they rather remain positive while hoping on positive fate.

I know you didn't mentioned if you ever felt discourage during this conversation..., but hey, don't feel discourage...., maybe see things at the positive side..., but be sure to be truthfull to yourself as well.
