(help us avoid compost gardening next year!!)

Our next homestead project isn’t very interesting but it is vital to our dream of producing our food. This last year we put up a temporary garden area. We were short on funds we only had one fenced in area to put our garden and this area is surrounded by trees. We thought it would help protect the garden from some of the South Georgia heat but I believe this is why our garden hasn’t produced anything. It’s either not enough sun or the soil is too poor. Our hope is to solve both problems with our next project.

We have decided to start on our permanent garden area sooner than we thought. There is an area in our front yard that we would like to fence in to use next spring. If we can get this done now we will have about 8 months to layer the area with organic matter and hopefully this will be enough to produce a decent garden next year.

After the area is fenced in using t posts and wire field fencing we are going to use it as a temporary rabbit colony. We will keep them there for a number of months allowing them to eat all of the grass and weeds down to the ground, hopefully killing everything so that we do not have to put down a barrier of some sort later. Not only does this enable us to avoid the work of killing the grass but we are using it as a trial period for meat rabbits. If we decide we like them we will spend the money on a permanent colony set up.

Once we move the rabbits to their permanent enclosure we will apply any organic matter we can get our hands on. Grass clippings, leaves, our compost, used duck water and wood chips. We will also continue to apply rabbit manure that we gather from the colony. This will be left to break down over the winter.

Our hope is that this is enough to build our soil quickly so that we will be able to get some produce out of our garden next year. It may be a little early for most people to be thinking about next year’s garden but we definitely waited too long this last year to get everything set up.

The space will be 80 feet by 50 feet equaling 4,000 sq ft. We are hoping this will meet all of our gardening needs as our family grows. In case it does not the fencing material allows the size easily changed.

What we will need:

T-Posts (14) 3.75= 52.50 (tractor supply)
Field Fencing (330ft roll) $154.99 (tractor supply)
Hardcloth cloth (100 ft roll) 49.99 x 3=150 (home depot)
-to keep the rabbits in
2 Wooden posts (2) $7.98 (home depot)
Fence Gate
2 Hinges
Lock
Buckets (4) $3.99 (tractor supply)
-rabbit shelter
Bucket Lid $1.99 (tractor supply)

Rough total cost $420

Boy is that an expensive garden! I’m sure you guys are wondering what two people plan to do with 4000 sq ft of garden!! Here’s a list of plants we plan to grow at some point. We will not be growing all of these next year, that would be overwhelming but we do plan to try a number of them.

(these are the seeds we already have! We actually did a post about what a deal these were. We have not decided varieties for the watermelon, lettuce, carrots or radishes so tell us what you like! Remember we are in zone 8)

I hope you guys stick around to see how this project turns out!

Good luck on earning for this project!

I don't know if you might have this problem but adding the rabbits there, how do you intend on making sure the rabbits don't dig out through the bottom? They like digging and can get out lickitysplit! Do you have them outside without the enclosed bottom already?

We do not have rabbits yet, we will get them as soon as the garden fencing is up. Basically we're just hoping the rabbits won't want to escape. I have watched a number of people raise rabbits colony style and for the most part it seems like if their area is nice they don't try to leave. Check out Peeble's Rabbit Colony on youtube! His rabbits have an extensive burrow system but don't actually burrow up. We will be using the bucket burrow system that Be Not Slothful uses in their colony (also on youtube). It will be an experiment and might likely fail but we're going to try and make sure we get cheap rabbits to start with haha

Our rabbit tractor has been working great--Andrew put a layer of welded wire across the bottom--it has big enough spaces so that all the grass pokes through and they can browse as much as they want, but it has blocked any and all attempts to burrow. Let me know if you want more information! Now that we've been using it for 3+ weeks, I feel more confident that it's working ;).

I prefer not to cover the bottom, I have seen people have issues with it eventually rusting out and we want them to be able to touch the ground! Our permanent colony area will have digging deterrents. We just didn't want to mess with it for 4000sq ft!!

That's a good point. We're new to this too, so it's all an experiment! Will you share what digging deterrents you plan on using with us?

yes! When we get ready build our colony I will share the whole thing! They are really intense and I don't want to get into it here haha

Oh, I'm sure. Looking forward to hearing about it! We're starting REALLY small with one buck and two little does that are way too young to meet him yet. We'll see what it becomes!

that's what we are going to do as well. Eventually I would like to have 2 breeding trios! What breed are you going with?

Maybe just make sure to dig down the outer fencing into the ground about 2 ft. :)

We will be doing this for our permanent colony in addition to a few other safe guards!

Love Baker Creek seeds! That's what we'll be using in our garden next year...when there IS a garden. Sounds like you've really thought this project through, and I think the pre-game rabbit party is brilliant. Looking forward to hearing how this all turns out!

Thanks! We shall see haha. We like baker creek as well and we plan on ordering some more for next year. Plus I need to get achocha seeds from an american homestead! I'm also interested in trying the varieties of lettuce featured on their last garden video, they look neat!

Good luck on getting the rabbits to eat that Creeping Charlie. We have wild rabbits and they don't eat that.

Good new is, supposedly it can be used for beer making, but I don't know how and I would rather it be gone.

Good luck on the homestead!

We have very little of it on our property and none where our garden will be!
