Witness Downvote

in #steemdev6 years ago

This idea just popped into my head:

Witness Downvote

Currently you only can give your vite to witnesses you like.
But what do you do with witnesses, that you absolut don't want to see up there on the witness top 100 list?
Nothing, just don't vote for them.

This could be fixed.
Just give everybody next to their 30 witness votes also 30 witness downvotes.

Those downvotes you give to the witnesses you most dislike.
Wouldn't that be a fun way, to improve the stale witness list?

Oh, I can hear you saying, how is this fair?
Well, nothing about the current system is fair, why should we even try to pretend it is?

It would add so much change and fun to witness voting.
Spice up things a little bit.

What is your opinion?
Could this be added to the existing witness voting system?
Another hardfork?
Not sure if other witnesses read this, but it would be nice to hear their point on it.

In the meantime, you can at least vote for me as witness.

I like the idea of removing votes from inactive witnesses but i don't know if downvoting would be the best solution for this issue.

What about a Steem protocol improvement where witnesses who were inactive for a period of time (6 month for example) will have all of their votes disapproved by the blockchain?

Inactive witnesses are just that, inactive. What is much worse are the witnesses that are active, and bad for steemit. Downvoting witnesses would give us a way to get rid of abusive witnesses.

Yes, that should also be included.
But the downvoting, well, it would be interesting to see this implemented.
There are some witnesses, I really dislike and don't want to see up there.
The downvoting does not address the inactive witnesses. It addresses more the fact, that TOP 20 witnesses stay there forever..

Could that be abused by a high reputation witness who downvote his competitors in order to save his place on the top?

It can be abused the same way the current system can be abused.
And currently you couldn't even counter those witness votes to bad witnesses, that play the system.
But yes, abuse would also happen.

I am the one hihi!
Got my upvote!
Can you upvote me back please?

Thank you!

No, sorry. I tried, but my mouse clicked the reply button. Sorry!

I think this is a great idea. While there is no way for us mere redfish/minnows/dolphins to act against misbehaving orca's and whales, witnesses collectively have at least some power to influence and attenuate bad behaviour by orca's and whales (and the rest of us). For something to work however, it is important that there aren't any foxes in the henhouse so to speak. If witnesses themselve act in ways that many of us would qualify as orca's and whales misbehaving, then we can really not expect such witnesses to act in the interest of the platform.

Personally, I feel strongly that whales and orca's running "unmoderated" vote bots are destroying the platform. IMO an unmoderated vote bot is akin to an open mail relay for spammy crap content. Given that at least one of the top witnesses is running an unmoderated vote bot from his own account, I feel strongly this person(s) should have zero business being a witness, so given the posibility to downvote witnesses, I'dd most definetely feel being able to wield a negative democratic right seems like a major missing feature indeed.

good thing about the witness vote is, that one can change it anytime.
And as often as you want.
Or you can split it, as I said yesterday:

  • 10 votes to top witnesses
  • 10 votes to upcoming and promising ones
  • 10 votes to new or wild ones, like investing in an ICO;)

Vote bots are here and they will stay. Only another hardork can chase them away.
The other option one has is, to use those unmoderated vote bots for good stuff.
But yeah, this just plays into the pockets of those bot owners :(

I know there is little that can be done about them, but witnesses running them truly sends out the wrong signal IMO. Witnesses IMHO should lead by example. Let me be clear, I don't have any issues with the concept of vote bots or crappy spam producers taking what is offered. The thing I have issues with are bot owners that can't be bothered to do some minimal moderation on the stuff their bot gets used for. Hell, they make a shitload of money from these bots, they could put in a tiny bit of time to weed out the worst content, right? Someone like our #25 witness sure doesn't seem to think so for example. What the hell is someone like that even doing in the top 50? So if anyone makes your point valid about the need for a witness downvote feature, it is witnesses like him.

I think it could be a problem because people with high Steem Power can easily eliminate the competition because their votes are worth more...

This is already happening.
A vote by @freedom does secure you a high spot.
@steem could setup 30 accounts and vote for them. (this would be a way for the gouvernement to take down the blockchain)
But the community votes are combined more than those of single accounts.
Same would be the case with added downvotes

yeah that's true! The systems needs to change to voting system where all votes are equal or the power of your vote is tied to your reputation... I prefer the second version because you can't abuse the system with bot accounts!

Just look at haejin, how he is abusing the system. And with bits, it is also easy to get high reputation
