TL;DR Smart Media Tokens (SMTs) - STEEMIT IS BECOMING AN ICO PLATFORM!
Today is a huge day for Steemit and for those who don't have time to read through the SMT whitepaper right now ( when you get the time you really should ) here is the TL;DR version:
- Tokens are being added to Steemit like Ethereum has ERC-20 Tokens.
- Anyone can launch their own token for $1 and start an ICO.
- Comments sections of popular sites (like the New York Times) will be able to reward people for contributing quality comments with tokens and getting a top comment will be financially rewarding and not just for bragging rights.

The main difference is that it is built on top of Steem so it is proven technology and already has a large user base. SMT includes the ability to distribute tokens through voting, just like Steem (or with some varied voting rules), although it can also be used for tokens with other distribution methods.
