WRAPPING - finally quiet nights or torture for the baby?

The WRAP - that is, the close wrapping of infants in blankets or blankets - has been around for a long time. In the meantime, technology has become more and more popular, especially among parents of so-called "writing abbots". They are supposed to get back the feeling in the mother's body through the close winding technique and thereby soothe themselves.

Wrapping has been around for centuries and in almost all civilizations. The basic idea behind this wrapping method is the assumption that newborns need limits and feel more comfortable when it is as close as in the mother's body. Especially for very restless babies, the spitting is often recommended by pediatricians. However, doctors are also concerned about this. Children should then be treated as a torture and even as harmful to health.

What is WRAPPING and how does it work?

When a baby is swept, a baby is so tightly wrapped in a cloth or blanket that it can no longer move, it is almost put aside. The arms are attached to the body and also the legs are tightly wrapped. The effect is usually that fidgety babies calm down and fall asleep in no time. It is important that the arms are really close to the body and that the baby can not escape. This can only be achieved by a really strong winding technique. Furthermore it has to be so spucked that the blanket or the cloth does not dissolve even with really strong movements. However, it should not be so tight that the baby can not breathe properly. The midwife can usually provide help. As a rule, the obstetricians know how to spit, can show the right technique and answer questions about spitting.

What is the effect of WRAPPING?

When a child is born, there are major changes, especially for the child. It comes from a dark and limited world into a vast bright boundless space. Most babies, especially when they have sufficient body contact, are quite clear with this fact. However, more sensitive newborn babies can be overwhelmed by the new situation and react with persistent cries and insomnia for the whole family. For these children, spitting can be the solution. Due to the close winding technique the security and tightness in the mother's body is simulated. Often one can directly see how a spiked newborn soothes itself in seconds and softens peacefully.

Wrap as long as necessary

There are no rules on how long a child should be popped. The limits set here the baby itself. In the first three to five months of life, the spit is well suited as a sleep aid, from then can be slowly vomited, preferably gradually. At the latest at this age, the Moro reflex, a protective reflex, also disappears, leading to uncontrolled movements that disturb the baby's sleep. Through ever lighter windings can be tested, when the baby is still asleep well and when it becomes more restless. Some babies have become so used to the spit that they want to fall asleep in the sixth or seventh month just so. Why not. Generally it can be sported as long as the child needs the tightness for a quiet sleep.

Sweat with sack or cloth

As a rule, a tight, not too thick cloth is enough to hold the baby firmly in it. If the technique is correct, it can not free itself. However, do not use safety needles to secure the blanket. The danger that the baby is injured is much too large. As an alternative, pucks are often offered. However, they usually offer little help, as the arms remain free. And it is precisely these that have to be close to the body, the child should fall asleep successfully. So if you want to work with a pucksack, choose a model that also includes the arms.

Does my child suffer when it is Wrapped?

We adults, whom we value our freedom, so the thought of being closely interwoven is almost cruel. For many - but not all - babies are exactly the opposite. Whether your baby suffers, if it is spat, you can see for yourself. How does your child work? Does it start to laugh when it is chucked, relaxes it, and sleeps peacefully for a short time? Then it certainly does not suffer. Children, who can not stand the Narrow while spitting, show this very clearly. Of course you should then react and free your child from the unpleasant narrowness, but not without giving him a chance to get used to this condition and perhaps not to find him so bad.

What doctors say about wrapping

It's somewhat irritating. If the wrapping was recommended for a long time even by pediatricians, the medicine is currently waiting with different horror messages. Thus, the risk of malformation of the hip joints is to be increased, also the risk of respiratory diseases increases according to a study up to four times. Spitting means long lying on the back, which in turn can cause a flattening of the back head. Due to the reduced skin contact, the increase in weight would be lower, and the development would be slowed. Except for the risk of hip dysplasia and respiratory diseases, the other concerns appear to be irrelevant, as many babies - unpobpted - spend the nights alone and away from maternal or paternal skin contact in their cot.

Whether you want to express your (scream) baby or not, you can decide for yourself. As with other controversial topics, you should listen to your gut feeling and pay attention to what is good for your baby - and that is above all quiet and secure nights and well-sighted parents.
