Young Prophet and Old Prophet
Among Prophets
In I Kings 13 ministerial details are recorded of two men who went down in history being known as the man of God and the old prophet in some biblical versions; in others, they appear as the young prophet and the old prophet.
The young prophet moved from Judah to Bethel by Jehovah's command, and when he saw the altar of the Lord being profaned, he prophesied against him. Judgment, sentence, reprisals and miracles occur when King Jeroboam hears the prophecy, commands the young prophet to be taken prisoner, stretches out his hand against him, and his hand withers, the man of God prays and the hand of the King is restored. The King offers him gifts that the young prophet rejects and reveals the knowledge that God's will had for him.
I Kings 13: 8-9
But the man of God said to the king: Even if you gave me half your house, I would not go with you, nor eat bread nor drink water in this place.
For this is what I am commanded by the word of the Lord, saying, "Do not eat bread, drink water, or go back the way you are.
The children of the old prophet tell him what happened and he proceeds to look for the young man who returns to his homeland.
Again the young prophet reveals his knowledge of God's will for his life and knew what God did not want for him.
Verse 16 and 17 are spoken again of the clear indications that Jehovah gave the young prophet and leaves very explicit what should not be done.
The old prophet reveals that his old age was also a symbol of the state of his life with God and his ministry.
The old prophet uses of the lie and declares:
I am also a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me through the word of the Lord, saying: Return him to your house with you, so that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied to him. Then he returned with him, and ate of the bread in his house, and drank of the water.
To all this comes the word of Jehovah to the old prophet and indicates the seriousness of the fault committed by the young prophet, who tells him that his body will not be buried in the graves of his parents, which can be summed up as an end to death and punishment for having disobeyed the word of Jehovah.
But although the deception of the old prophet was wrong, Jehovah had been clear to the man of faith: regarding his instructions not to eat and drink anything and to go on a different path than he had come.
Then the teaching is in the order that Jehovah gives to the man, and in that all of it was very precise the Lord, this makes us think and reflect on the goals that God puts in our lives and that only he can guide us and separate us from them, But if we take away the faith of God and bet on trusting men, then our end will be fatal. Taking a path or path other than the one God has delegated to us can lead you to a path of calamities and even death.
Concentrating on the objectives that God places for us must be the priority, not losing sight of the only north of our motivation and strength: Almighty God.
